Cloth Diapering

favorite newborn diapers?

I currently have a toddler who I'm cloth diapering and a baby on the way in a couple of weeks. I've been cloth diapering for a while, but for various reasons, we didn't start with my first child until he was about six weeks old. He was a big baby, so by then he had outgrown our newborn diapers and we went right to one-size pocket diapers, so I don't have any experience with newborn diapers. Since I'll already be washing diapers for him, I'm planning to start right away with this baby. I have a handful of different types of newborn diapers that we were never able to use with my first, but I was wondering what people have had the best luck with? Some of my nb stash are prefolds- where can I get info on how to use those? When I look at them, all I can picture is runny nb poo everywhere- do they really keep things contained? Do you use pins or snappis with them, or just put them under a cover? Do fitted diapers contain the mess better with newborns?

I've been poking around online, but there are so many options it's overwhelming. Any suggestions for favorite types, brands, diaper/ cover combinations, or anything like that would be great. Thank you so much!

Re: favorite newborn diapers?

  • Yup, prefolds are great.  Jellyroll folding keeps the newborn poo well-contained for the most part.  We used snappis.  GMD workhorse (newborn) are a favorite - if you want to try some fitteds I would go that route!
  • Gmd has prefold folds on their website. I loved prefolds and fitteds with covers for NB stage.

  • Blueberry newborn simplex all the way! It took me a little bit to figure out the prefolds and covers so I washed every day so I could use the simplex. If I couldn't do the simplex I would use GMD fitteds. But I plan on doubling my simplex stash for the next kid.

  • I am currently CDing a 5 week old in prefolds and covers and love it.  Prefolds, we use the angel wing fold exclusively right now, snappis, and covers have done an amazing job containing DD's EBF poop.  We only have osocozy unbleached prefolds in size 1 and sweet pea covers in NB size (didn't have a lot of money to spend on building a NB stash) and I would recommend both brands.

  • I'm the odd one out here, I didn't like prefolds during the newborn stage but I did love flats snappid with covers (much trimmer). I love my prefolds now though, now that were one the next size up - they just seem to fit better, maybe it's just the shape of my LO.

My favorite covers werey Rumparooz nb and my Blueberry Capri nb. They both fit right away (no leaks or leg gaps) and lasted a while - the RaR up until 4 months and the Blueberry we still use with pad folded flats at over 5 months. We're also still using our Thirsties size 1 which always fit well. All three brands were money well spent.

  • We used the GMD prefolds and RaRz NB covers. I was really intimidated but its the easiest, most fool proof thing. Especially when it comes to washing! We were able to use the nb covers until 4 months. Worth the investment

  • GMD Newborn (orange edge) Workhorse's with Thirsties covers were bulletproof for us. I also loved the fit we got with SoftBums Echos with their small inserts.
