Preemies

Started speech therapy for eating age appropriate solids

We have such a long way to go.  We started by me feeding her level 2 puree.  Then ground a ritz cracker into powder and mixed it in.  She did fine with that.  So she crumbled another and left itty bitty pieces and N started gagging right away.  So we have to start off by just making her food thicker, but not adding chunks.

And then the speech therapist said she's taking too much formula for her age.  I hadn't completely cut back because I was worried about her getting enough nutrition.  So we're going to start working on cutting back on the amount of formula she has a day.

Kinda feeling like a bad mom because she is behind on eating.

I was wondering how it went this week. Don't feel bad! One fire at a time and she was eating and growing. I know I have trouble not viewing DS2 as a little baby even though he is over 2. I "forget to worry" about certain milestones. She will get it. It's a lot like the NICU feeding wait though. It's slow progress and one day you will realize Hey, she ate all of that! I don't know if you see a nutritionist but I love ours. She talks me off the ledge a lot when I worry about him needing nutrients and want to pump him full of pediasure but also want him hungry enough to want to eat real food. It may help you find the perfect balance for y'all.
Yeah, we're just getting started and I'll be glad when her ped is back from Maternity leave.   Breakfast was a struggle this morning, but hopefully lunch with bit a teeny bit better.

    My Wonder Woman!

  • My daughter was similar- at a year old, she wouldn't eat any purees or solids, and only wanted bottles. We did OT for it, and it helped immensely! After a couple of months, she was eating much better, and we were able to stop therapy after about 4 months. Good luck!

You are doing a great job!

My little guy was supposed to be evaluated last week for intake into EI (for potential feeding and other milestones) but we had a tornado warning and I had to reschedule. The earliest appointment is now another 2 weeks away.

He just started "army crawling" this morning at 8 months adjusted. But, I find myself having to carry him upright more often than I ever had to with my others due to his GERD (and he's an awesome snuggle bunny) ;)     annnd of course, I have a IRL friend with a full term baby the same actual age and that kid is almost walking.. I try my best to not compare or feel guilty, but it is hard. I understand!

  • Don't feel bad at all. It's a long and frustrating process! With DS, every specialist says their thing is most important - pedi says he needs to brush his teeth more, OT says that will mess up therapy, lung doctor says he needs formula, pedi says more formula, and I think about drinking. It's so confusing. DS has a lot of eating issues but he's starting to get better. We've spent about four or five months working on it and one day it just clicked. So just do what you think is best for your kiddo and the rest will come! Also drink.
