    U only get 12 weeks??
We get 12 months in Canada. I wouldn't even cut my 12 months short I eff that cutting your 12 week leave early.

Yes! Thank goodness I live in canada! I could not imagine having only a couple weeks of maternity leave or my employer cutting it short. Also, canada is completely paid leave... 1 year of paid leave.

I would put up a fight if my employer tried to get me to cut it short... Even here.

  • OP, I agree with a lot of PP's: check with your HR first. If you have a union, talk to a union rep too...it will spelled out in your contract.
Again, like other PP have said it varies from state to state and even within the state depending where you work.

At my job, if you've been there less than 3 years, you are entitled up to 6 months off (use sick, PTO and FMLA then go unpaid for the rest). If you've been there more than 3 years you are entitled to 12 months off. (Again, same process for pay above). You just work it out within your family and talk with your immediate supervisor on what the plan is. I'm taking 6 months...what we've planned for.

If your contract states 12 weeks, you're entitled to it as long as your job is secure. Sorry your dealing with a B of a boss. Also sorry if I missed any details...there was a lot to read through on this thread!!

  • during HR orientation, my HR person made what I thought was a good point.  She said that, yes, FMLA is 12 weeks, but as that is on a rolling basis (from the first week you take it, I guess?)  it was usually a good idea to not take all 12 at once.  She suggested saving a few of those weeks in case there are issues in the first year...how often do kids get sick and need to stay home from daycare?  It wasn't something I had ever thought about, but made sense.

Of course, it benefits the company too if I don't end up needing all 12 weeks, but I wasn't planning on taking more than 8-10 anyway due to the way our maternity leave works.

Yea, I saw that we can use sick hours for 6 week natural/ 8 weeks c/s, but gotta Have PTO/ vacation for the other leave. Unless I fall into an exception, like (cross my fingers not) there's another complication where I am medically disabled.

I'm going to try to transition back to full time by usingFMLA days to make my week practically part time for a bit. Noticed some of my coworkers do that.

I really feel like after this pregnancy, I really really can't get sick/ go on vacation.
