Shy toddler?

Hey guys! Sorry I don't post here much but I've read off and on since I was pregnant with my Oct. '12 baby...who turned 2 last Friday:). I was just wondering if any of you are dealing with this like I am...DD is so incredibly shy with kids her own age. If they're quiet and don't like run up to her and try to touch her she's fine, she'll try to share toys and sort of "play" alongside them but other than her little sister (and this only started recently) she doesn't really like physical contact with other kids her age. She will actually scream and cry and hide behind me. She's also not very verbal yet which makes it harder. Anyone else dealing with something similar? She's fine with adults, she's very lovey and cuddly in general which is why this shocks me so much with kids her own age! We go in for her 2 year appt. on Tuesday and I was going to talk to the pedi about it, but was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this? TIA!

Does she have much interaction with kids her age? It could just be unfamiliar to her, and that makes her uncomfortable. Or she could just be shy. You said it's a recent development. Did something happen with a kid her size? Biting or hitting or something?

My older son was like that. He was around adults more than kids and was more comfortable around them. I started him in daycare at 3 a couple times a week. Also because his speech was delayed he found that adults would work hard to figure out what he was trying to say. He is still shy that is just his personality and mine. He does have friends in k that he hangs with regularly. I would

@CnAnA- the recent development was that she's ok with her baby sister touching her and she'll actually give her kisses and stuff now- she was never really a fan of that before. But to answer your other questions no I stay home with her so she's not around other kids every day other than her sister..which I do think will help as she's getting bigger and more interactive because she's just going to have to get used to it. But she never really had a bad experience, my closest friend with a child her age has a daughter who's very very sweet but likes to be kinda in your face..and they're the ones we wind up having "play dates" with most often. Another friend of mine has a son who is 4 months younger than her and they play well alongside one another and she's not throwing fits or anything, just seems to really not like kids who come right up to her and try to touch her or something. I feel bad because the kids who do this are just outgoing and being sweet and she's just not handling it well..but being in those situations really seems to bother her and I just don't know what to do to make it better! It's frustrating!

Yeah that sounds exactly like her! and her speech is right on the border of "normal" for this age..she doesn't talk much. I was going to put her in a mom's morning out program this year but it's a decent drive for me and only 1 kid could go so I figured maybe I'd wait until next fall and do it then when at least I could drop both girls off and get some errands done by myself or something. But it's good to know it improved with time!
