Organizing the nursery

I have a few silly nursey questions.

I forced myself to nest this weekend so the closet in the nursery is all cleaned out and the baby clothes are all washed. We also have an empty dresser in there.

Is is worth buying baby clothes hangers?

How do organize the closet? Thanks to a awesome friend of mine I have her old baby clothes and they go to 2T.

I am wanting to organize it so that all the clothes get worn and I afraid if I put clothes on the dresser the bottom pile will be out of sight and never used.

Just wondering what others are doing and using to organize.

Re: Organizing the nursery

  • Im using the dresser for onsies and sleeper and pants. The closet is where outfits will go and I will organize them by age and how "Dressy" they are.

  • I only hang special "outfits" and outerwear in the closet. Anything that baby will wear on a regular basis goes in the dresser.

If you want to be sure to use everything, get in the habit of putting laundry away at the back of the drawer/bottom of the stack (depending on how you organize your drawers).
  • I've hung everything up, but that's only because I have more closet space than drawer space. I bought the closet size dividers. We have mostly little stuff for now but will store bigger clothes in rubbermaid tubs until they are needed. I bought a couple sets of the drawer organizers from Ikea for LOs dresser. Using it for diaper changing supplies, socks, hats and blankets.

  • I should also note I hang as much as possible because I avoid folding laundry like the plague. Hanging is no issue.

  • I don't have a dresser in the nursery... Just a nice big closet... So I have a tower organizer from Lowe's with shelves, 6 canvas cubes on the top shelf, and 2 half-size closet rods for hanging. I hang most everything in my own closet, and plan to do the same for this babe. I figure I will hang dressier things and coordinates... I'll use my canvas cubes for sizes he is growing into, and the shelves are good for extra diaper supplies. I'll use one shelf with baskets for little socks, etc. I will likely roll pants and onesies and put on a shelf, and hang most everything else. I, too, have a plethora of Target baby hangers. They're pretty inexpensive.
  • lol @ hanging baby clothes.

The only reason we hang anything in this house is because I can't possibly stuff more shit into the dresser.
  • I have older clothing organized in drawers by size, and anything 9 months and older is in boxes in the top of the closet. I have a shoe organizer hanging on the door for socks, bibs, hats, etc, and the only thing not in the closet is cloth diapers, and blankets because I'll be going through a million of those a day.
  • Our house is so old it only has one closet and that's in the guest room. We only have a dresser in DS' room and it's worked out just fine. We have an armoire in DS' room also and the only things that get hung in there are special occasion clothes and coats. I've always hated hanging clothes so I just organize them in the dresser by shirts, bottoms, PJs, and various other drawers for socks and shoes and random stuff. I haven't organized LO's stuff yet but I imagine it will be by size and type (sleepers, onesies, bottoms, etc.)

  • Bigger sizes are in bags in the closets. 0-6mos are in bins in the changing table his dresser.

  • For our LO we have a main dresser in the nursery that we are also using as a changing table--that will house 0-3m onesies, sleepers, pants, cloth diapers and nursing/diaper accessories.

I then have a chest of drawers in the closet with 3-6m clothes, all bigger clothes are in a plastic storage container on top shelf of the closet. Items on hangers are nicer/dressier outfits up to 18m.

This. DH does laundry when he home, and I get annoyed when he doesn't place the clean pile at the bottom. Lol Sometimes, I tell him to fold them, leave them in a basket and then I eventually restock them as we run low.

  • Little hangers are the best ! Dd is almost 8 and I still use them in her closet so I have definitely got my money's worth out of them !
  • I have been washing clothes as I get them or my friends have given them to me fresh. I actually organized LO's dresser and closet this weekend too! I have been hanging dresses/outerwear too. I have NB onesies and sleepers in the dresser, along with 0-3 outfits tucked away in the bottom drawer, I also have leggings and socks in there. I would recommend getting one of these closet dividers, I have them and they have made things a lot easier, especially since my cousin and best friend are giving me hand me downs for way down the road. They have them online and I found some at hobby lobby as well.

This! I had a friend who used a shoe organizer for the tiny baby stuff and i think it is such a brilliant idea. Thank you for reminding me this is an option. It's on my list of stuff to buy :)

  • I use the top dresser drawer for diapers then the next 2 for the first few months of clothing I.e. newborn thru 3 month. Everything bigger gets hung up in the closet (3-12 month). When he grows out of one size in the drawers I take it out, box it up, and replace with the next size from the closet. I started this when I nannied and will implement it with my own kids. Can't stand clutter!
Also the other side of the dresser has a door with a shelf. I use baskets in there for hats, socks, sleep sacks, and shoes. Everything has a place, I'm a bit organized!
  • I got everything put away! I bought the hangers at Target, already had some of the ikea drawer organizers, and took the hanging shoe organizer from my room. I left the top drawer empty for diaper stuff, then the middle drawer has the 0-3 onesies and sleepers, the bottom drawer has the 6 months stuff. Dresses are hanging in the closet and anything 12 months or larger are in the hanging shoe organizer.

I love the idea of the hanging tabs to sort the clothes by size I will be on the look out for them. I also would like to put labels in side the dresser drawers but that might be too OCD.

There is still a lot to do but I am feeling more ready!
  • We used our dresser for cloth diapers and PJs. All clothes were on hangers in the closet organized by size.

  • I bought hangers for my sons clothing. The way I did it was size order starting with onsies newborn then 3months 0-3 months then 3-6 months. I hung a closet organizer I bought from BRU and used the shelves for his pants. Pjs went inside the dresser along with socks and shoes sweaters and baby blankets went into the bottom drawer. I tried to make it as organized as possible.

I second the "special outfits" get hung notion. Dresses and non-everyday things will be hung. I organize the dresser with one drawer, sleepers, one drawer socks, then all other drawers by NB, 3 months...
  • I rotate according to the size I'm currently using. I keep the stuff we aren't using yet and the stuff the kids have outgrown in large plastic bins, organized by item/ size (ie 18 month onesies, 2t shorts) etc.

  • I hang almost everything the first few months. Folding little clothes sucks. All outfits and sleepers are in the closet. In the top drawer is bibs, burp cloths, socks etc. Middle drawer is onesies. Bottom drawer is the next size onesies and sleepers. I always keep the hangers from Carter's, macys etc when I buy clothes, it makes hanging them easier.

When we got to size 6mo, sleepers were no longer daytime wear so those went in the middle drawer with onesies. I like to keep outfits hung together to make getting dressed in the morning easier. DH is able to get DD dressed because he doesn't have to worry about matching.

  • i have a set a drawers and each draw is a different clothing size. i have newborn till about size zero in the drawers (got a lot of clothes cheap at thrift sales). Anything bigger than that (which isn't much) i've hung.
I think what i'll do is as my hub grows out of each size i'll transfer it into a space bag or box and store it up the top of the cupboard and move everything up a drawer so i'm always getting things out the top drawer.
I don't have much though. Just onesys in each size. If i had fancy outfits i might hang them but don't really have any.

  • We folded and put in drawers sleepers, pants, and just plain onsies and hung everything else. All organized by size. We got baskets and labeled them for everything else for shelf in closet like blankets, burp clothes etc.
  • Well, as of right now, there is no dresser in the nursery so we are hanging everything up except for onesies and pants, which are going in little bins on the top shelf of her closet.  Sleepers, shirts, outfits, dresses, etc. are hung up.  If I finally quit procrastinating and find a dresser, I'll put the stuff in bins in there.

Personally, I don't mind hanging up baby clothes, even sleepers and stuff.  If I don't use them directly out of the dryer (which is more than likely what will happen), then I just keep a bunch of hangers in the laundry room and they go straight into the closet.  We did this for DS until we bought his dresser a few months ago and it worked fine.

I usually go L to R in closet with NB/0-3 mo stuff on the L and then bigger stuff to the R.

  • I don't have any clothes yet... eh, a pack of onsies, 2 swaddle blankets, a halo, and two fleece onsie things... LO's closet still has DH's crap in it... we should probably get on that....
