Meeting w/ RE for very preliminary questions--what to ask?

DH and I are meeting with an RE next week to get his opinion on my situation and whether we're following the right course.  We're currently TTC, but I'm having a lot of endo symptoms again and am wondering whether being off BCP right now is the right decision, since if we do IVF we won't be able to start until the fall.  Anyway, I was wondering what questions I should ask.  DH wants to know our chances of getting PG w/o intervention, but will they really be able to give us a semi-specific number? (i.e. 15% or something). My gyn is very vague in these areas and it drives DH crazy.  Thanks for any advice, I'm just not sure what to expect.

  • Our RE really did most of the talking and asking of questions on our first visit. It wasn't until tests were performed on myself and my husband seeing the urologist in the practice that they were able to give us a 25% chance on our own.

     Good luck!!

  • The same thing happened to me. Being off the BCP killed me because it controlled the pain of my endo. I would make sure you ask what their percent success rate is for people in your age range for both IUI's and IVF with endo. I would also ask what testing they would do to determine your best course of treatment. I would suggest you ask about an HSG to determine if the endo has caused any damage that would make a cycle less successful.

My GYN was vague also but I attribute that to most GYN's lack of training with fertility issues. They really just don't know.

The RE will be able to give you percentages of your chance of success w/o intervention. My RE did anyway, I believe, with endo, he said your chances are 30% over the course of 3 years. Most couples have at least a 30%-50% chance EACH month if they are both healthy. We had only 30% over 36 months chance. After the HSG revealed tubal blockages, he lowered our chances of conceiving w/o intervention down to practically nothing.

We opted to go with the IVF because the meds for IUI's would make my endo worse, and lower the chances of an IVF ever working if it came to that. We had a much better chance of success with IVF because it bypassed the blockages.

    Diagnosis: Endometriosis with Complete Tubal Blockage IVF # 1 Fresh Cycle- It's a girl!! 8/12/09 IVF # 2 FET- MC IVF # 3 Fresh Cycle-MC IVF # 4 FET- BFP Arriving 8/8/12!!

  • Hi there! My RE told me that my chances of conceiving naturally are less than 10%. I'm not sure how she came up with that number. My chances of conceiving through IUI are also less than 10%. She also told me that if I stay off BCP, the endo is likely to return within six months (due to its severity). I am missing at least half of my right ovary. I definitely suggest that if you are going to be off the BCP, you should do the most aggressive treatments possible. I'm glad you are going to see an RE finally! Good luck!
