If you Cloth diaper get in here!

We fell of the CD wagon back in April but we would really like to jump back on! Our previous CD stash is either very worn or will no longer fit her, so we are starting from scratch.
So what do you like and why??? H and I both really liked prefolds, but im guessing things could be different now with her walking.

Also how many diapers do you go through a day on average??

TIA!!!

Re: If you Cloth diaper get in here!

  • I found a new love for Bumgenius Freetimes.  4.0s are good too but I don't like stuffing them. I like them because they are easier and hold more than prefolds and covers that we have. When she was younger I liked Bumkins contours (these are like prefolds but no need to fold anything since they are like a contoured pad) with Thirsties covers.  We go about 6 diapers depending on how many are poop.  We do disposables at night.

I also mostly use BumGenius freetimes. I found that he soaks through the included insert pretty fast, so I've started adding an extra insert under the flaps. I like hemp or hemp blend ones because they're really thin but hold a lot.

They're a little more expensive but if you go directly through cottonbabies.com you can get deals for buying in bulk. I feel like I'm getting my money's worth because they're still in good shape after a year and I still have another level of snaps to go up so I think they'll fit for a long time.

We use around 6 a day, I use a disposable a night though.

  • I use Charlie Bananas, Kawaii and a few others that I got on Zulily. We also have some Flips that we use with their microfiber inserts. I wash every 3 days and we go through about 6 a day. I only CD part-time since daycare doesn't let us use them. I use about 20 a week in all.

@MrsGiantPenis‌ depends on what you need to strip them for.

A vinegar soak will work for hard water mineral build up. Or you can do a stripping with dawn and lots of hot washes and cold rinses. Or you can also try bleach. If they are prefolds you can also boil them. What issues are you having?

We use fitteds with a cover and I love them. Totally bullet proof. Motherease Sandys. I transitioned to using a wet pail to avoid ammonia, and wash every other to every third day. I've gotten lazy and use a disposable at night. At least they are biodegradable? :D (Naty brand).
  • We still like prefolds and covers, but C hates getting diaper changes, so we use pockets a lot more now, especially out and about.
Imagine prefolds from Nickis, Assunta covers, kawaii and a few alva pockets.

@rondosa‌ sorry to correct you but no no no on the dawn. That will ruin your washer. And no on the vinegar with hard water.

If you need to strip do and rlr soak for several hours. Rinse then bleach soak for 30 Mons. then several washes. Also there is tons more info on the FB group fluff love & CD science. If you pos your issue they can help you with what to do
  • Dawn will void the warranty on your washer. Dawn is a degreaser, you can use it to spot clean non-CD safe creams only.

I do NOT recommend the fb group fluff love & science.

Check out the cd board here first.

  • @MrsGiantPenis‌ bleach will kill some things in diapers, like yeast or mold, but even then you only need to use 1/4 cup

  • @squirmworms‌ you're probably right on the warranty part, though I have done dawn a couple of times and it's been fine. I have a front loading HE machine, and I should say that it was literally 1/2 tsp of dawn, at most. Maybe even less. It did work for our situation.

Why do you not suggest vinegar? I've read it on several CD forums and blogs.

Still, the best solution I've found for us is a wet pail with a bit of funk rock or RG in the water. I'm also only doing this with cotton fitteds, not aio's.
  • @rondosa I heard vinegar makes the smell worse with hard water and that bleach is better.
  • Ahh @squirmworms‌ fair enough. I've found it so hard sometimes finding the right advice on CD because every combo of machine+diaper+soap+routine+water is so variable, you know?

Here's an article I found helpful on the topic. Anyway, we have medium-hard water and I've used it to strip them to help soften them up after a couple of months and it worked well, but it wasn't for a specific stink issue. Oh the joys of CDing, though I am still happy we went this route from the start. :)
  • We use a combo of pre folds and rumparoo covers and bumgenuis. Although we are in disposables while dealing with a bad yeast problem I can't seem to solve....

  • Here is my tips. My first child was full on CD including daycare and trips to the store. After two babies, the Velcro tabs are not working on her bumgenius. The snaps on the fuzzibunz seem to be in good work. I ordered some itti bitti diapers on babysteals for $11. They are quite trim and we have other ittis so the quality is good. Not a big fan of all in one but these are to supplement the pockets I have that are just not working anymore because of the Velcro. We use sustainable babyish fitteds at night with a blueberry one size cover. Worked with my first until she was ready to potty train.

We had battled a yeast rash a couple months ago and stripped with grapefruit seed extract. Look it up. It worked well. Now, I have added GSE to my wash routine to keep the yeast away and we have been successful so far. Our water is slightly hard. I do a short wash (with a bath towel added since I have HE and need added weight to get enough water) on cold/cold with no spin. I add a splash of calgon to the rinse for the hard water. Then I do a hot/cold wash extra rinse with a splash of calgon, followed by country save detergent and two drops of GSE. That's all I need. Every once in a while, I will do another rinse on warm/warm.

    Good luck.
