ER sedation

What kind of anesthetic did your doc use? How did you react?

In the past I've always gotten sick from the anesthetic and I *really* don't want to do that after ER.

Re: ER sedation

  • Both times, mine used versed and diprivan.

Has your anesthesiologist given you an anti-emetic before waking you up in the past? If you tell them you have intense nausea problems, they'll usually plan for it.

  • I had versed and diprivan too. And I was given zofran prophylactically for any nausea. No reactions at all!

  • I had a TIVA (Total Intravenous Anesthetic) with versed, fentanyl, propofol and zofran.  I don't know what types of anesthesia you have had in the past, but a TIVA technique can actually be used to decrease the risk of nausea.  So, it may not be an issue for you.  Also, if you let them know you have had nausea in the past most providers will add in an antiemetic (like zofran).  Good luck!
Me 27 DH 29 Married since 2007, together since 2001
Off BC since Febuary 2006 3 Clomid Cycles in 2008- symptomatic, US just showed a tilted uterus, otherwise normal, HSG normal.  DH has an ejaculatory duct obstruction and a congenital absence of the vas deferens.  This is common with cystic fibrosis carriers, but he doesn't have cystic fibrosis. IVF #1 with TESE/ICSI (Antagonist protocol) Aug 2014=BFN (poor embryo quality)   IVF #2 ICSI long lupron protocol November 2014

I forgot what they called it this morning at my retrieval. It wasn't general anesthesia. propofol was used however. I don't remember anything at all. And woke up fine without a problem. Good luck!

  • I told the anesthesiologist that I had been sick after my last experience with anesthesia, and he gave me something through the iv to help with it. Not sure what, but I didn't get sick this time, so it did its job.
  • I had propofol for my ER, no problems for me. I've only ever had a reaction to Percocet.
  • Propofol and fentanyl. I told him to go as light on the drugs as possible! I was out quickly and woke up quickly and didn't feel a thing. That was the part I was most nervous about but the anesthesiologist was super nice and made me feel safe. You should get to talk to him/her before, so just mention the nausea and they should give u something for it!
  • I had fentanyl and propofol.  Went very well for me.  I'd previous had versed for a polyp removal and was VERY knocked out and woke up nauseous.  I'd recommend the propofol route.  I woke up very easily and was really wide awake within minutes, no pain.
  • Stress that you get sick from it - when I've had doctors listen to me, I've woken up completely fine.  They refused to give me the anti-nausea patch before my tonsillectomy though and I was SO sick.  I've already warned my RE about that and they said I could have it, no problem.

  • I also had fentanyl and propofol. I get some nausea from pain/anesthesia and they just give me zofran through my IV and I'm fine.
