2 week old lost weight. Hope?

Hey all!

My son was born 7lb 7 oz and I started ebf immediately. Second day in the hospitAl and lo hadn't had a wet diaper that day and nurses scared me into supplementing with formula. This messed up lo's latch. At one week 2 days he was up 7 lb 11 oz. That same day I decided to toss all formula and bottles and ebf. We had problems with latch and decided on the nipple shield. At 2 weeks 2 days LO went down to 7 lb 8 oz .... :.(. We are weaning off the nipple shield. I am so sad and I feel like a failure. I'd like to think I have Enough milk. I feel empty more often then not and leak a lot. When I hand express I squirt. LO tends to be a lazy nurser. Falls asleep at the breast pretty quickly. Does anyone have advice? Or similar stories with a happy turn around? I really want to breast feed my child.

  • I also want to say that he nurses constantly!!! I feel like he is constantly at my breasts. I feel like he barely sleeps even. :.(
  • A two week old baby will always be at your breast!  That is completely normal.  If you are squirting milk and leaking a lot, you don't have a supply issue.  You don't normally feel full unless your LO has missed a feeding.  Your baby is basically up to birth weight at two weeks, which is the mark for an EBF baby. Your LO has lost a little, but was also on formula which may have contributed to the extra weight gained initially.  I'd just monitor the wet/poop diapers and contact your pedi if you see a decrease.  You can also take LO in for another weight check, or a weighed feeding.  You can do this!  GL!  I wouldn't worry about the supplementing early on.  Your LO needed it if there were no wet diapers.  I supplemented early on with my third LO, and was able to get back to EBF with no issues.

  • have you checked for a lip tie? That could be the issue with his latch.

My LO lost a lot of weight, nearly 10%, and didn't gain it all back until about 3 weeks of age, and then was a VERY slow gainer. For us, it was because he was such a squirmer that I was constantly moving him from one breast to the other, so he wasn't getting enough hind milk. Plus, once he started daycare at 12 weeks and was getting more bottles, he started to gain a little weight. We haven't had his next checkup yet, but I can see it in his cheeks.
At 3 months, he was 8 lbs 13 oz (up only 2 lbs from birth), and still in newborn clothes. After 2 weeks of bottles and getting more hindmilk, he's in 0-3 month clothing and his arms and legs don't look like toothpicks anymore!

  • I would see a lactation consultant, she can do weigh baby before and after a feed to see how much baby is transferring, check baby's latch, and work on some techniques with you. So helpful. I just went with the ladies connected with the hospital and it was partially covered by my insurance.
  • DS was hospitalized at one week old for weight loss and low body temperature. He was a lazy eater. I would nurse, then pump, and supplemented with formula if I didn't have enough breastmilk. I saw the hospital LCsand went to a hospital support group. DS is now one. You can do it! Good luck!
