Help.Sick mama, week old baby (Update in OP)

edited September 2014 in Breastfeeding
Hi ladies,
So I either have mastitis or the flu (nausea, chills, fever, engorgement). I'm going to my Dr tomorrow but in the mean time I'm so queasy I can barely eat and worried about my supply. Babe is only 7 days old.
I'm drinking lots but can only swallow applesauce, jello, toast for food. Is this enough? If not any other suggestions? Being on a nb schedule is hard enough without feeling like death :(

Ps, sorry for spamming the board...its been a tough few days.

***Update -- thank you ladies so much for your help and kind words. Went to the dr who ruled out mastitis and uterine infection. Unfortunately my husband is now sick so Dr says it looks like it is a nasty flu bug. Which sucks, but better than the alternatives.
On the plus side I'm able to eat a bit more now, baby has had great pees and poos and has even gained 3 oz since our appointment on Monday so it looks like my supply has not been impacted.
Thanks again, the bf board was my salvation with my first child and you guys have already helped me so much this time around!

  • It could definitely be mastitis with those symptoms. I would call your OB, tonight. Supply can be impacted when you're sick and the best thing to do is take in as many fluids and calories as possible and nurse around the clock. I know this is very hard to do. Make sure you are monitoring wet diapers and I can not stress enough, you should be seen or start antibiotics asap if its mastitis.

  • Sorry to hear you're sick!  Make sure you keep hydrated.  I wouldn't worry about the calories as much as making sure you don't get dehydrated.  Feel better soon!

  • Sorry to hear you're not feeling well... being a mom of a newborn's tough enough already! Hopefully you'll be well taken care of at the dr.'s tomorrow.  Like PPs have mentioned, try your best to hydrate as much as possible.  Get well soon!
  • Thanks for your response @AmyG*‌ . My temp is hovering around 102-103. I was quite engorged with some lumps under my armpits but my breasts are softening today. Last time I had mastitis I had the red streaks but not this time, so I will ask about postpartum infection. Thank you!

  • I actually called her back and got her to call in the rx when my temp spiked, so starting that now!

  • Feel better soon.
  • Thanks for the support ladies!

When my baby was around the same age, I had my first episode with mastitis.  Initially I did not have any breast pain and I thought I had the flu!  I even went so far as to wear a surgical mask while nursing b/c I was afraid to breath on LO.  It wasn't until the next day I saw the redness on the underside of my breast in the mirror that I realized what was going on.  I felt extremely ill.  Mastitis is definitely a possiblilty.
