I keep sleeping on my back!

I'm a back sleeper normally but I've been trying so hard to sleep on my side. Well I keep waking up to myself sleeping on my back! I'm worried about the baby. I have no idea how long I've been on my back each time but it always feels like ice been in a deep sleep. I have a pillow in between my knees and in front of my body but what else can anyone suggest? Should I be worried?

Re: I keep sleeping on my back!

  • I do this too! And it always wakes me up when I try to move back on my side. I know that sleeping on your back puts pressure on the vena cava which can restrict blood flow to the heart and eventually the baby. That leads to oxygen deprivation. I'm not sure how to fix it either... I even invested in the snoogle pregnancy pillow. I always start out on my side but I have even woken up on top of it while I'm on my back. The struggle is real!

I have the same problem; I put a pillow behind my back too so I don't roll back, but it's still hard not to when I'm sleeping :/
Still experimenting with the pillows. haha
  • I wouldn't sweat it. All you can do it try and position yourself on your side. Use pillows behind and in front of you. Nothing you can do if you turn over in your sleep. I've always heard it said that you will wake up if you start to feel unwell. When you wake up, just reposition yourself in your side and try again.

  • @summersunshine916‌ you and I are always up on TB together. Yay for being night owls?
  • You actually lose your breath before anything goes wrong. Once you start to become out of breath on your back, just reposition. I've been having a tough time sleeping on either side, it gets really painful. I wake up at least once a night from not bring able to breathe... My dr actually told me to expect this when I said I end up sleeping on my back.

I've had the same experience as @alissendis, where I've felt short of breath and had to move. Other times, It is a sad moment when I wake up cocooned in my snoogle, thinking damn I'm sleeping well and then realize I'm on my back. It seems like if it was a strict never do it rule, my doctor would have mentioned it more often, but I mostly hear about it here and in my yoga class.

The past few nights, once I turn to my left side, I've been feeling the baby kicking immediately after. A little worried I'm suddenly dumping it to one side; I imagine the baby just blooping over to the other end like a waterborne slinky.

  • I seriously just woke up on my back with the snoogle wedged under my right side and my belly resting on the dog. She seems ok with it.
  • Don't worry. Your body will naturally reposition itself when it becomes uncomfortable. Our bodies know what to do just like when you are sitting on your butt for too long you naturally shift to avoid a bedsore. You subconsciously do this as this is how our bodies are programmed to work :)

100% this. I wake up on my back occasionally and feel fine. My birth class instructor said she was on her back once and felt like she was going to faint. You will absolutely know when something is not right!

  • Talk to your doc but mine didn't care. She said the same thing pp did. I will wake up sometimes with my snoogle still between my knees but I'm laying on my back. I just move to one side and go back to sleep. :)

I tried! I changed it on the knot. It doesn't show my email online but on my phone it does. Any suggestions? I tried logging and out. It welcomes me back as my username but then posts as my email. Grr!

  • So here I am reading American Baby magazine yesterday & it says it is no big deal to sleep on your back. I'm like WTF? Everything I've ever read says no. And agree with other posters on that your body should wake you up as you will start to feel funny. At least that has happened to me. Not so sure about this American Baby magazine now. Seems like bad advice they are spewing!
