Breastfeeding

Night weaning Q?

Hi - my LO is about 9.5 months, breastfeeds when together, eats 3 good solids meals a day, takes bottles at DC (usually 1/2 BM, 1/2 Formula for the past month, before that, all BM).  Until recently, he would wake up 1 time per night, and fall asleep while breastfeeding so it wasn't too bad for me.  A few weeks ago, he started waking up multiple times per night, and he would often scream, even after eating.

I really don't believe he needs to eat at night.  He is in the 50% of weight, has tons of wet and BM diapers per day and is eating just fine.  I think he's just used to it, and truthfully, I think a lot of times I am so tired at night I just feed him when he wakes up in hopes of him going back to sleep.  Well now I am just done with it, I am tired of being a walking zombie at work, and I think I want to try to night wean him.  Any suggestions?  I know the standard suggestion is to have someone else go in the room, but my husband travels for work 50% of the time.  We do have a long stretch that he will be home next week (4, maybe 5 nights in a row), so I was hoping to start then, but I am afraid that any progress we make will be shot when he goes away again.

Ideas?  What has been successful for any of you?

Re: Night weaning Q?

  • I've tried tylenol 1 night that it was really bad, and I guess it sort of calmed him down (not sure if it was the tylenol or if he just calmed down as he usually does after a bit).  I thought it might be teething pain but he already has 4 teeth and got them without a big problem - just a little crankiness for a few days.  But who knows, maybe it is teething pain.  Just seems weird that he is literally fine all day, even when he wakes up in the AM, but not in the middle of the night?  And he's fine when he first wakes up (cries just a bit, more a "get mom's attention" cry), it's usually when I try to put him back down and/or when I finish nursing.

Either way, I want to try to stop night feedings anyway... has anyone been successful around 9-10 months at this?
