Those that travel with kids in beds

I originally requested a crib for L in Disney, but now that she is in a regular bed, I think she will rebel going back. I asked the hotel and they have cots available (for an additional charge - awesome), but no bedrails. Has anyone traveled with bedrails or should I just roll a towel under the sheet? Think a new, 'special' sleeping bag or something would work to keep her in bed?

Re: Those that travel with kids in beds

  • James usually just sleeps with us in a hotel. The rental home we stayed in a few months ago had a really tall twin bed with hard wood floors and I was worried about him falling out of it so I put a pillow under the fitted sheet.

  • We bought this: https://www.kidco.com/products-page/peapod-plus/ when Brody first started sleeping in his own bed when we traveled.  We called it his travel-tent and he was always really excited to sleep in it.  It also zippers, so it kept him contained when he was younger and couldn't figure out the zipper.  And it's really easy to travel with since it folds up pretty small.

It's a little pricey, but we travel a lot, and he was still using it up until a few months ago.  We'll probably transition Aedan to it sooner than later now that he can crawl out of his PNP.

If you don't want to spend $ on anything - I would just roll a towel under the sheet or a pillow if the cot is big enough.

  • @kelbel527 I was looking at something like that. Do you put it on a bed or the floor? Is there any padding? I feel like it would suck to sleep on the floor for a whole week, even as a toddler.

@hmp1, she won't sleep with us. Hasn't since she started sleeping in her crib. It would be so much easier if she did.

  • We use a pool noodle under the fitted sheet as a bumper. We cut two in half to make them more travel sized & used 2 pieces for each kid.

It has a mini-air mattress that slides into the tent.  So it's actually more cushioned than our PNP.  It comes with a small hand pump to inflate the air mattress.  The mattress is probably about 1 inch thick.

Looks like there's two versions or something, one is $44
If you decide to get it, I would get the "plus" version (the $69 one on zulily), it is slightly bigger so it will accommodate using it longer.  I think the plus is recommended 1-5 yrs and the regular one just 1-3.

  •  We use honest foam bumpers at home, and bring them with us when we travel.  Nice because they are light, not treated with any fire retardant chemicals, and she's never fallen out of bed.  I'd highly recommend them, cause they're cheap too.
  • We bought a toddler air mattress. I love it. Its perfect for hotels and stuff. I also take it with when we go to my sisters house for him to nap on. Its $80 but it gets a lot of use.https://www.amazon.com/AeroBed-sleep-tight-inflatble-beds/dp/B00006IV33/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410264988&sr=8-1&keywords=kids+aero+bed

  • I have thought about this..but how do you get your LO to STAY in the bed/cot/air mattress/etc. when you put them down? Especially if you're in the same room??

We have two of these for the kids. We really like them. I'm not sure they're small enough for a flight though.

For us, we follow the same bedtime routine (wash up, pjs, books, sound machines) & they have their security items from home - toy, blanket, pillow.

Dd is still on a crib at home, but on our most recent vacation, she slept in the bed no problem. We brought our monitors, so we were able to go through our routine, tuck them in, and walk out of the room for them to fall asleep on their own, just like at home.

  • This all sounds like a lot of work. Lo just sleeps with us (score one for King size beds when we travel!) and I deal with the feet-in-myface as they happen.
I would happily deal with feet in my face, but she will not sleep. The last time we tried to share, she was still awake at 2am. The following day was not fun at all.

Thanks for all the advice ladies. I will look into the options.

  • AJ sleeps in a toddler bed, and just stays were I put him.
