Audrey debate

I recently told my husband I like the name Audrey for future daughter and he said it's a boy name.  I can only find info that supports my thinking of it begin a girl name but my husband is convinced it's an old  English male name (and I think I had a male customer at work answer to his wife calling "Audrey").

Do you think it's traditionally a male or female name?

  • I've never known a boy named Audrey.
  •  I've only known very old men named Audrey-anyone under say 60 or so I've known with that name is a female. So it seems to be a female name in recent history, but was a mans name long ago.
  • I feel like there may be a lot of confusion here between Audrey and Aubrey...

nope, I just looked it up again and it is listed as m/f name on a few sites. When naming my daughter, I read it in a book.

Which sites would those be? I like reading about the history and linguistics behind names.

  • Audrey Hepburn!! Definitely feminine. A lot of names double like that. My name is Lauren, which is traditionally a woman's name, but I've met some men named Lauren.
