We are down to two names that we LOVE but have concerns with both so wanted your opinions! With Charlotte, we are getting concerned that it is being overdone and maybe should go a different route. With Victoria, we love the name, but hate all nicknames (no Tori, Vicky, etc.) and don't know that we want to be THOSE parents always correcting people and defending the full name. Help. :)

Re: Girl Names

  • I don't like the nicknames either... But I don't mind Victoria. I think Charlotte is becoming too popular, and it's my dogs name.

I voted Victoria and personally don't even think it needs a nn. However how would you feel if your daughter liked the nn Tori or Vicky?
Good question because I actually brought this up to DH this weekend that it would bug me, but I would have a hard time telling my child she couldn't go by what she wanted because I value independence.  So then we started debating the names all over again!

My husband has a very classic, traditional name, but in high school, he chose a nn and has been going by that ever since. I get tickled because I only refer to him by his nn, but everyone in his family uses the full name. You can tell his mom didn't intend of him having a nn.

My sister is Jessica, but all her close friends call her Jess.

My son's name is Harrison. I really don't like the nn Harry, but if he wants to go by Harry when he's older, that's fine by me, as long as it's his decision.

All of that to say, kids will pretty much decide what they want to be called.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
    3 failed matches in 2012.
    Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
    Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

  • I voted Victoria. Some kids get called nn's that have nothing to do with their first name even, so it's pretty unavoidable. I'd go with what you love and worry about nn's if and when one comes up that you (or she) doesn't like.

I actually love the nn Tori, but Vicky I would not like.

  • Victoria.

I know one that goes by Vix.  Not sure if that makes it better or worse for you, just thought I'd throw it out there.

I feel exactly the same way about Victoria. I love the name but the nicknames suck, especially Vicky. For that reason I voted for Charlotte.

This. I know Charlotte is popular but it's lovely and the nickname possibilities are much better IMO.
  • There's pros and cons with both, I prefer Charlotte, it's beautiful and has some good nn but it is very popular right now. Victoria is also pretty but I don't like the nn options either
  • I love Victoria, Charlotte is very pretty but super popular in my area.

  • My guess is that at some point, if you pick Victoria, she'll go by a nn...I like Charlotte better either way even if it is popular...

  • Honestly, I've never met a Victoria that went by her full name. I think you should toss both Charlotte and Victoria. They are both lovely names but I think Victoria will be nicknamed eventually and with charlotte, if you feel it's overdone then I can see you growing tired of it and having name regret later on.

    Some other suggestions just in case;

    Alexandra
    Francesca
    Adeline
    Lauren
    Juliette
    Caroline
  • Charlotte I'm a little sick of.... Victoria is beautiful :)

  • DD is Victoria.  Everyone calls her Victoria because that is what we call her.  My older daughter called her Toria when she was little because she couldn't pronounce Victoria.  She still refers to her as Toria sometimes, but she is the only one and I think it is cute!
  • Well, I'm a bit biased since I have a Charlotte! But I really love Victoria too. They both have the same "feel" to me (maybe it is the queen theme?). The only Victoria I know is my son's age (5) and everyone calls her Victoria. I've never seen anyone try to call her anything else. I don't think it would be an issue with that name.

You really can't go wrong with either! That's super helpful, isn't it? ;)
