Cruising with infant ...any suggestions.

Hello ladies, very soon my family and I will be leaving for a three day cruise to the Bahamas. I'll be taking my DS who will be 11 months when we cruise. Any suggestions on what I should bring? I'm also concerned about morning sickness on top of motion sickness. Never been sea sick but I do get motion sickness often.

So any suggestions and or tips??

Re: Cruising with infant ...any suggestions.

  • Two separate pieces to plan here! For LO I would pack like I would for any other trip. Obviously lots of sunscreen and a hat if he agrees to wear it!

For yourself- a little tougher. Maybe ask your Dr or one of the nurses about their recommendations for motion sickness. If it's something you've dealt with in the past anyway then it would be worth knowing.

For morning sickness my go-to is zofran. I'm also turning into the zofran queen around here, but I swear by that stuff. It's great to have around "just in case," so one more question for the nurse/Dr. It was my lifesaver while pregnant with DD. Our pedi actually gave us a scrip to keep some on hand for when DD gets sick. Seriously miracle drug...

  • My sister used something called sea bands during her pregnancy that were made for sea sickness. They might be worth trying. You have to wear them on both wrists, so you might get a funny tan line, but she thinks they helped, and she had Hyperemesis Gravidarum so her nausea was pretty significant. She just gave them to me but I haven't tried them yet.
  • We went on a 5-day cruise with my extended family when DS was 9 months. First, I will say that the planning was way more stressful than the trip itself.

Packing clothes: For each day I had two outfits, one pair of pjs, and 3 bibs. You will likely only need one swim suit for him since he will only need it on the beach at ports.
Diapers/wipes: I decided to overpack in this area because I would prefer to have too many than to run out. So, I went with 10/day even though he hadn't needed 10 diapers/day since he was newborn. I took one regular package of wipes plus had the travel ones in two separate diaper bags that I'd refill if needed. I didn't bring a lot of swim diapers since he wouldn't be in the water THAT much.
Food/other: DS was breastfed (still is, for that matter), so there was no need for bottles/formula/etc. (I did bring my pump because I normally pumped after he went to bed for the night, but I ended up not using it.) I brought no extra food because DS basically ate anything we put in front of him, so I knew we'd be able to find food and we did.
    Other:
Of course, we brought a thermometer and Tylenol, just in case. Something I wish we'd thought of was saline solution for his nose. The rooms/ship can be very drying and he definitely seemed like he had a cold much of the time. Tons of sunscreen. I way overbought it, but we are a fair skinned family and I was taking no chances.
I went ahead and brought two of his towels from home for shower (remember, the cabins only have showers, no tubs; this wasn't a huge issue of us) and his own wash clothes.
A lightweight, easily collapsible stroller with shade (don't use just an umbrella stroller; you will want that shade).
We carried on the bag packed with all his stuff just in case it took awhile for our bags to get to our room (we packed him in an old gym bag with lots of compartments). For our other carryons, DH used his diaper bag, which is a backpack, for his stuff and it carried diapers/wipes/clothes for DS. I carried on my diaper bag with our papers, diapers, wipes, a change of clothes and I carried on my pump bag with a few pieces too.
Unless you co-sleep, make sure you can get a crib. Honestly, it was great to have even though DS ended up sleeping with us. It cuts down on space in the room, but it was a great place for DS to be while we needed to get ready/pack/unpack. We also packed a couple of his favorite blankets for the crib.
I only packed a small bag of his favorite toys.

That's all I can think of right this minute. If I think of more, I'll post.

For you and sickness, definitely talk to your doctor. I'm betting they would be willing to give you a prescription just in case so you aren't miserable.
