Adoption

Intro and Some Questions

Hi there,
Dh (35) and I (27) have made the decision to pursue domestic infant adoption after 2.5 years ttc. We started talking about adoption shortly after we found out the news that we couldn't have children naturally on our own. We decided at the time to save up for one IVF cycle so that I could feel like we pursued the road to biological children to its full extent, even though DH was ready to adopt then.  Our cycle ended with a bfn and since then I no longer feel the need to keep pouring money and heartache down that particular funnel and am embracing adoption as the path to building our family. Right now I'm in the researching stage, since I want to give myself a couple of months to get back to normal both physically and emotionally and we need to save a little more so that we can be in the best place possible to accept a match. So I've got a few questions if you don't mind answering them?
1. We're thinking of remodeling the guest half bath into a full bath with special kitty closet, should we wait to start the homestudy process til after it's finished? Like if the SW comes and approves the house and then we remodel will they have to come again?
2. If you did DIA did you use a national agency or a local one?  Pros and Cons of each?
3. Would you mind sharing your agency and experience? Especially if you adopted in Tennessee
There are just SO many agencies out there, its hard to even narrow it down much less choose!

A little more about us we've been married for almost 5 years, together for 9 years. We've got two wonderful furbabies, both kitties. Dh is in management and I'm mostly a SAHW with a small photography hobby business on the side. (My biz took a huge hit this year when I took an outside job to fund IVF I'm debating on getting it going again or just letting it go now that I'm back at home). DH is into music, he actually studied to do audio engineering and we're slowly putting together a studio in our basement. He's a drummer (oh my poor ears ;) lol ) Besides photography I dabble in a little bit of everything, baking, crocheting, digital art, writing, reading, and video games. Nothing like zonking out in front of a video game to ease stress, right?
Anyways I used to lurk here every once and while before we made the decision to try IVF and I recognize quite a few names. So I'm looking forward to getting to know ya'll better.

Re: Intro and Some Questions

  • Welcome back! This is a great group. On to your questions:

    1. I'd run it by whomever you use. Something relatively minor like that shouldn't delay anything though

    2. We used a regional agency, with offices in 6 states, including ours. For our first time out, we wanted a real person to talk to. Since then they now place nationally, and hook up families with local home study agencies. There's really no pro/con, just what works for you. Your state may also allow facilitators or consultants, and some people use law firms

    3. PM me if you want my agency name. We had a great experience with them. We were matched 10 months after we started the process.

My recommendation is to attend some orientations or call agencies to get a feel for them. That can often help narrow things down
  • We are going through our state's DCF, so I can't offer any advice, but I still wanted to wish you luck!
Happily married Mom to 2 beautiful little girls, 2 dogs and 2 cats (all rescues), 2 fish and one 29 year-old firebelly newt.
~ Hoping to add to our family by adoption via Connecticut DCF. Application submitted on 2/4/14. First home visit on 6/23/14. Started class 11/17/14.~

  • Welcome!

  • Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and for answering my questions. Dh will be happy to know that the remodel probably won't affect anything.

  • Welcome
DH and I are pursuing DIA as well.
My SW told another couple at a meeting that she does not hold renovations against people.  Our agency is regional, but does not extend to Tennessee. The biggest reason I went with this agency is that if we have a disruption, they will use the money towards another placement. I also really clicked with our SW right away.  If you go to some meetings, you will probably find one.
