I am 7w3d pregnant with twins and have been taking my metformin for 6 months now. At my RE appt yesterday, he graduated me to my OB/GYN. I told him I was to run out of metformin soon (today) and he said well have your OB check your glucose levels to determine if you need to continue on it or not. I do not have an appt there until next Wednesday and am nervous about stopping the medicine, even just for a week. He said I would be fine to discontinue use of it anyway.
My question I guess is, if any of you were on Metformin, did you stop taking it once you got pregnant? Before end of first tri?
I was in metformin, but am/was non insulin resistant PCOS (always normal sugars) so it was ok for me to stop taking it once I was pregnant.

I am 26 weeks and I continue to take metaformin. My OB said it can help reduce miscarriage changes in the first tri, and because I have insulin resistance, it helps prevent gestational diabetes throughout the rest of my pregnancy. Good luck!

I also have insulin resistance with PCOS. I am 13 weeks right now but when I first found out I was pregnant I forgot to ask my doctor if it was okay to keep taking the metformin so I stopped it for about a week. I went crazy, I could feel the changes so quickly even without eating sugar it was not a smart decision for me. I did some research and talked to my doc fin ally and like PP said it does reduce your chance of early miscarriage as well as help with gestational diabetes. I myself am on the lowest dose 500mg) and it doesnt seem to be working anymore so tomorrow at my appt I am talking to my doc about possibly allowing me to take more, I really dont want to develop the gestational diabetes sp I wantto get this under control now. with this medicine the rewards greatly outway the riks.
Thanks so much ladies!! I called my pharmacy and they approved another RX so I am going to continue it until I speak with my dr next week. I'm nervous bc i have only seen her twice which is during my annuals. I see my RE for all things fertility/pregnancy related so I feel she wont know what to do/say. Sigh. I just want to rest easy. Thanks again!
I stopped my Met at 12 weeks. My MFM wanted me to have an early glucose test, which I did at 14 weeks, and passed easily. I'll do the normal gestational diabetes test later on. It was so great to get off the Met and away from the GI issues!
