Easy baby --> challenging toddler, challenging baby --> easy toddler

Curious... Based on your experience so far, how accurate is the idea that easier babies grow into more challenging toddlers and vice versa?

  • My two fit the mold exactly so far.

  • Marnie was a high maintenance baby, and a really easy toddler. We lucked out with how easy she was.

Amanda was a high maintenance baby and is a miserable toddler.  So we won the jackpot on that one.

  • Ben was so difficult as a newborn. Then from 5 months -9 months he was a happy, easy, compliant baby. Now he's high maintenance again. And in aspects he is so easy and others he is so so difficult.

:( ETA: it sounds like you're really struggling. I'm sorry. It makes me so sad to read that.
Thank you @lizabethann06. We are doing our best.  DH and I are really laid back by nature, so dealing with an extremely high strung toddler is very foreign to us.  She doesn't cry a whole lot, but has high needs regarding attention, and the screaming like she's being murdered at the drop of a hat is grating.

We are hoping that once she can express herself verbally that it will help with what seems almost like uncontrollable rage (on her part). I'm a little scared about what our relationship will be like when she's a teenager.

She does make the perfect middle child, though..... ;)

  • Haddock has been pretty easy as both a toddler and a baby. Aside from the normal sleep struggles, of course.

Is my next baby going to torture me? ;)

James was a high maintenance baby, but once he started to crawl, things got a lot easier. Now that he's walking, he's so happy. I think he was just frustrated that he couldn't move.

Everyone says, oh watch out - once they're walking you'll wish they weren't able to! But I've never been upset about him reaching milestones/wished he couldn't do something. It's all so awesome!

ETA: I was a little annoyed that my in laws (sil mostly) was forcing walking on him. I just want him to do things at his own pace :)
  • C is still a baby to me. I don't think you automatically become a toddler when you turn one, especially when you aren't walking.

Even so, like PPs have said he isn't even 14 months old yet, I don't know what kind of toddler he is.

  • With the exception of sleep issues, Luke has been the easiest baby I've ever been around. It always amazed me that he was SO happy with so little sleep. I swear, as soon as he turned one, he realized he was supposed to act like a toddler though, because literally on his birthday, the tantrums began and haven't stopped. I would still only consider him mildly challenging and I think a lot of it will get better when he can communicate better. I can tell he just doesn't understand why he can't have certain things and it's really upsetting to him. I try very hard just to redirect, but it generally doesn't work because he goes right back. I know this will pass and I'm thankful that this is really the only challenge we have.

  • Nikita...great baby. Good toddler. This 4 5 6 age has been over flowing with sass.
  • I can't say S is easy or challenging. He just is who he is, and I love him for it.  :x
  • DS1 wAs a very challenging baby. He's still our "grumpy" child but listens very well, and I consider him to be an easy toddler. DS2 was the easiest baby and so far is an easy toddler. Although he is starting to develop of a temper and definitely know what he wants (or doesn't want)

I chose other. No correlation here. My son has all the moods since birth. The child goes from Cherub to Damien in less than 60. *shrugs*
