Oatmeal or solids yet?

So LO is 15 weeks and today we started with oatmeal! He did a wonderful job and knew exactly where his tongue should be and swallowed really well! I was reading on gerber as long a they are supported sitters and can hold their head up really well and can push himself up and turn his head while on his tummy it was time to try. He had about 5 bites and then was over it. I think we will try every couple days or so. Anyone else yet?

Re: Oatmeal or solids yet?

  • Not yet. My pediatrician said to start cereal at 4 months. I want to start at 3 months!

  • Nope.  We do BLW.

  • Nope. I'm sure the pedi will bring up his suggestions at our four month appointment, but I'm leaning towards six.

  • I'm excited to try him on solids, but we're waiting the recommended 6 months and doing BLW. It's basically what Health Canada recommends now, nothing until 6 months (no cereals, purees, etc) and then just starting with manageable solid food.
I had never heard of baby led weaning until my doctor told me about it (she didn't call it BLW), but after researching the Health Canada thing it's basically what it is.

  • 6 month waiting here too. Their digestive tracts aren't fully developed and can hurt their tummies.
  • Maybe a dumb question but why was cereal fed at earlier ages in the past and it wasn't a problem on digestive systems but now it is? Does it depend what brand is bought? In the 80s and 90s it was common for babies to be introduced even earlier and it wasn't linked to being hard on them. Is it because these days there is so much crap added to food?
Also if a baby is FF until 6 months or 1, how is the extra iron bad now and not at 6 months? I think each baby is different with different needs at varying times and stages. No guideline is perfect for everyone. As well if cereal has no nutritional value, why feed it to LO at all?
Sorry, that was a few questions...
  • The cereal is debatable. There's no nutrition in it. More for practice and filling them up to sleep better at night.

I'm going with 6 months. Despite being told start at 3.
  • We were going to do BLW but I'm thinking I'm too nervous with his gag reflux Nd how sensitive it is. We may continue oatmeal and in a few months maybe try it depending on how it goes. And yes after getting the email from gerber that says 3 months get the spoons out! I signed into my acct and just out of curiosity looked at all the steps and he's mastered all of them. We were waiting more toward 4 months of which my pedi recommend. But he seems ready is the reason and also he's seems hungrier after his bottles as well!
  • Our pedi wants us to try cereal at 4 months due to reflux as long as there isn't anything strange found at his swallow study. At this point who knows for us. I'm not in a hurry BUT if it helps his reflux game on.
  • We plan on BLW after 6 months and when DS shows any interest in food. If you are giving cereal too young and filling LO up on it then you can actually be decreasing their nutritional intake. Cereal has little nutritional value compare to breast milk or formula so by filling them up they may take less milk, therefore getting less of what they actually need. There's no way I'd follow the recommendations of a large corporate company who's sole purpose is to sell product over the national paediatric guidelines or the WHO.
  • No we are by passing cereal and that's why I started on oatmeal no nutrional value in cereal. And no we aren't replacing any meals or anything lol. It was more or less just "trying" it out and seeing how he did that's what this whole post was about. Don't worry I wasn't just going off what a huge corporation says. Our pedi as I explained said we could try and not to mention she said it could help with his reflux.
  • DD is only 3months but we'll be waiting until 6months and do BLW like we did with DD1.

@bossyferg you dont have to feed your kid cereal at all, I never gave any to DD1. I think the reasoning in the 80s and 90s was because babies were primarily formula fed or breastfed on schedule not on demand, so they didn't get enough nutrition with milk/formula only and had to start on cereals and purees early. But for babies who are EBF on demand they get all the nutrition they need from BM alone and don't actually need food the first year.

It isn't that it wasn't bad before- it is just that we know now. Many things done in the 80s and 90s are now known to have adverse effects. There is also a link to starting goods too early and childhood obesity. As @florassecret‌ said, the cereal is mainly for practice, and hey, supply and demand.
  • I know they will discuss this with me at the 4 month appointment. But if cereal is the first thing they tell us to try, I will wait closer to 6 months. I will start solids at 5 1/2- 6 months definitely.

    It's a BOY

  • Will they have you start with cereal at 6 months too?

    It's a BOY

  • When we go for our 4month appointment her dr said he'll talk to us about solids than- so we're waiting until than.

No, my pedi (who is also a pediatric nutritionist) says wait til 6 months and go straight to 'real' foods. He says purée at home if we are more comfortable with puréed items.

There's no reason to use formula 95% of the time. Some people use it around 4 months thinking it is easier on the baby's tummy but point blank the gut isn't ready. Unless there are other medical concerns being addressed then the AAP actually recommends waiting until 6 months at which point you can start with veggies and then move on to fruits.

Forgive me while I sound like a fool and yes I could google, but what IS BLW exactly? Real food, but things that a baby can tolerate like bananas? :/

DS1 started with green beans for example. Obviously it's age appropriate foods (no nuts when they have no teeth or choking hazards) but you let the baby explore. You don't put any food in their mouths. You let them pick it up and play with it and eventually taste it (often they spit it out in the beginning) and finally chew/swallow it.

  • You know what's funny? AAP says veggies first, The Canadian version says meats first then veggies, fruit and grains last! Interesting how two countries have such a difference while usually so close in other recommendations :)

  • I'm in no rush to start any type of solids. Ya it will be fun as a FTM to see his reaction, but it makes me nervous just thinking about the mess and choking possibility. I plan on doing BLW.
  • I waited until 6 months with DS, and plan to do the same again.  Why rush?
