Fetus might have a fused suture?!

I am absolutely freaking out right now. I got my 20 week ultrasound and went to see my OB yesterday. He said that the baby is a boy (yay!) but that he MIGHT have a fused suture :( Which basically means that one of his soft spots might be growing together before it's supposed to. He says the ultrasound tech wasn't 100% sure and he told me not to worry about it...but obviously I'm going to worry. If the baby does have this, he will need surgery during the first few months of life to remove some of the bone on his skull so his brain can grow properly. My OB made it sound like this isn't a big deal...but I guess he saw how upset I was and offered to give me another ultrasound around 30 weeks to double check. I looked it up online (I know, big mistake) and some of these conditions look really terrible! Anyway, I just wanted to get it off my chest. I haven't talked to anyone else about it other than my bf...I'm trying to stay positive and upbeat for my 2 year old, but I just want to curl up somewhere and cry. I'm just wondering if anyone else knows anything about this? Or if you have any thoughts on the situation?

Re: Fetus might have a fused suture?!

  • No experience. Just try to focus on the positive of the appointment until your next scan. I know it's hard to do, but remember that the doc wasn't too worried about it. Good luck and keep us updated!

  • My cousins son had this! He is now a normal 16 year old!

  • Thank you for your warm wishes everyone! :) I'm trying to stay positive...my boyfriend is being incredibly supportive and remaining upbeat (as usual lol). I guess my biggest concern is their quality of life being compromised. I just want my kids to be happy.

That's great to hear @Kmm1023! Makes me feel a bit more at ease :)
  • I hope everything is ok. I would ask for a follow up with a specialist. If there is a chance you dont need to worry or be proactive after delivery I would want to know. Keep us. Updated.
  • I actually saw a patient with this condition recently.  12 month old boy who had it done just recently. Two days post-op, he was back to normal, albeit with some stitches in his head.  I don't think it typically has a long term impact, and it relatively common.  It does sound scarier than it is.  But, i would wait until the 30 week appointment.  It's not going to impact anything in-utero. He'll develop normally in there.  When he's born, and as he grows, they'll keep track of his measurements and decide when (and if) he needs surgery.  I know it's terrifying to think that anything can be abnormal, but he's healthy and that's what matters!  Congratulations on your baby boy.  Please keep us informed!

  • Yep, what @Cryssteen said, they will track it as he grows (after birth) and he may not even need the surgery. My sister's foster daughter's son (<---- Lol, a mouthful I know) needed the surgery, but did really well, and had a simple recovery.

    Good luck!

  • No experience, but sending positive vibes your way. Congrats on your baby boy. Try to stay positive - they told me DS had a cleft lip (I know it's not the same) but he was born perfect, there is a margin of error. Keep us updated!

LOL I always have to check google and then of course freak out afterwards. I should have came here first ;)
  • I have a friend that their baby had this. He had surgery when he was a few months old. He is doing really well now. If I remember right, they said it actually is fairly common. Definitely wait for the next ultrasound and see if you can talk with a specialist after that. Try not to worry too much and focus that your baby boy is otherwise healthy. Thoughts and prayers going out to you and your family.
  • Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for your kind words and support. I cannot tell you guys how much better I feel after reading the success stories and positive vibes! :) My next OB appt. is on Sept.10. I'm going to express my questions and concerns to my doctor then. If the 30 week ultrasound shows that the baby does indeed have a fused suture I will definitely be following up with a specialist and I will update back here too!
  • @JRod13 My boyfriend is remaining hopeful that the doctors messed up...The ultrasound tech was having a difficult time getting pictures because of the way the baby was positioned. Maybe that could cause a misdiagnosis?
  • A little girl I babysat for as a teenager had this issue. It wasn't discovered until she was probably 6 months old. Someone noted that her cheeks were uneven--one full and one more flat, but still both normal looking. The surgery was scary for her parents, but everything went well and she was very normal and healthy. And I think she's married now, which makes me feel super old!
