Things to do with a baby in NYC - HELP

Please help. My mother in law is living up in NYC for the next 6 months helping out w my 3 month old nephew. She is not that familiar with city and besides taking walks, shopping and getting coffee and lunch, she is looking for things to do with the baby while sister in law is at work. They live near Columbus Circle. ANy story times for babys? Mom groups or playdate groups? Museums or movie theaters that have times you can go with baby and ones you recommend. Anything else great, and bonus if free? She would love to meet other caregivers, grandmoms or moms with young babies to do things with too.
