how long and how many?

How long does it take your los to eat and how many oz? It seems like im stuck to the couch anymore my butt will be pancake flat with too much more of this couch lol. My lo takes anywhere from 30mins to 1hr to finish 3-4oz every 2hrs. Is this normal? I feel like i'm part of the couch these days. She falls asleep while eating too. Maybe she needs a faster flow nipple?

Re: how long and how many?

  • They get cut off after 30 min unless briskly eating. This is what we told to do by the NICU as otherwise they spend more calories eating than they get from the bottle. I don't know if your baby necessarily needs a faster flow nipple but it's possibles also that they're jus snacking. Have you asked your pedi?

  • When i nurse her, it takes about 30-40 mins and she usually takes about 4ozs every 3-3.5 hours. She falls asleep almost every time she is at my breast. If she doesnt, she fusses that the flow is too slow... When she falls asleep, i usually play with her hair and fingers, tickle her feet, etc. If it gets too bad, i pick her up, burp her and/or get up with her for a min and start again.

If I bottlefeed her, it goes much quicker like 15mins. She typically doesnt fall asleep with the bottle.

How old is your LO? 3-4 ozs every 2 hours (and feeding for an hour) seems a lot. How many times do you feed her in a day or how many ounces does she take in a day? Mine will be 10 weeks this wed and I estimate her taking about 28-32oz total.
  • She does anywhere from 22-28oz a day she only wakes up once in the night to eat. She's 8 weeks wednesday. She drinks formula. I weighed myself then her and there was a 15lb difference so she weighs 15lbs give or take. My ob had told me that she should be drinking 4oz every 3-4hrs by the time she's 2mo but she cries for food every 2hrs and doesn't care for her paci. I try moving her when she falls asleep but she don't pay any attention to that but if dh says wake up real loud she opens her eyes gives a leave me alone look sucks once goes to sleep. I'll take it out and she will wake up a few mins later wanting more then the same thing happens. This also wastes alot of formula cause it's only good for 1hr after it's mixed. Idk what to do.

Some kids eat more often, especially if they are sleeping through the night except for one wake-up.

And to the bolded - I'm pretty sure formula is good for 24 hours once it's mixed as long as you refrigerate it. That's what we did for DS.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I go to dr in 2 weeks and i will be asking. I just wanted to see what other moms was doing till then.
  • @flerlgirl i didn't know that it doesn't say on the can that you can do that that's very good info to know thank you. I didn't make that bold letters i guess it did for me and i have heard babies eat more during the day too if they didn't wake up often to eat in the night.

I was the one who bolded it so you would know what I was referring to :)

  • Oh ok lol sorry
  • @nutmegs8 i thought she might be done too but she wakes up wanting more a few mins later. I feed her when she sucks her hand or is trying to eat her blanket. And yes! It is really every other hour that she starts wanting more food guess i need to start trying to make her wait a little while. I'm going to call the ob they just hardly ever call me back. :(

I'm not sure the OB could do anything. The pediatrician is the call you need to make.
  • Well he's actually both. He's the dr she always goes to. He takes care of the babies he delivers.
  • Once you mix the formula with water you can refrigerate it for up to 24 hours.  If the baby has started to eat from it, that is when the 1 hour limit ("limit", as some people will let it go a little longer) goes into effect.

  • I agree with following up with your doctor as well.
However, I was just dealing with something similar where my daughter was also taking nearly and hour to finish a bottle. We tried a few different nipples and a few different bottle systems and this week finally found one that she likes. Now she finishes her 5 ounce bottle in about 15 minutes.
So long as everything else is okay, baby may just need a new bottle system or nipples.

  • My dr called back! They said if she don't eat all of the formula it can be refridgerated for 4hrs. Her eating is just fine she does eat more during the day because she only wakes up once in the night. Although they never really said anything about her taking so long to eat but i will get to talk to the dr about it more tomorrow when i take her to see why her belly button is still open! They didn't seem alarmed by it just said they would look at it. Everybody said it would close up it was just where her cord come off too early but she's almost 2mo and it's still open at the bottom.
  • 1. If LO is sucking on her hand or a blanket she might just want to suck on something. Not always a sign of hunger. With mine I give him his paci and if he spits that out more than 2 times I know he's hungry and not just wanting to suck on something. So that could be why she eats so much... because you are feeding her when she isn't hungry and just needs to soothe.

    2. Her belly button didn't close? So it's bleeding? If not could it just be an innie? They will typically have what looks a little like a hole. Also all belly buttons are different. That doesn't mean something is wrong.
  • It's not bleeding you can see in it when she strains like when i'm changing her and she tries to raise up it looks like it opens and it looks black in there. Why would it be open if it's an innie i don't understand it at all but i'm not too worried because everybody else seems ok about it. I just don't think there should be a whole there.
  • Just at the bottom it's kind of open and sometimes you can see in it a little at our last appt the other dr there said it looked ok and she could take tub baths but it's still not closed. It's not bleeding or red it jus looks open not like the whole things wide open just a little at the bottom of her belly button. She lost her cord earlier than she should have cause she grabbed it during a diaper change. I will know more tomorrow and update.
  • It's a normal belly button thank god! She's growing great so i'm a happy mama today!
