Infertility

New to PCOS

I am actually in the hospital right now. I have cyst on each ovary, both are infected. I have learned quite a bit while I have been here tho. My doctor said that I probably have PCOS for one. We also found that I have hypothyroidism. And she told me that it's a possibility of my tubes being inflamed/infected as well, which could affect fertility. So I am pretty overwhelmed with new info. I have started taking meds for the hypothyroidism, and just wanted to start on a diet and even more exercise for the PCOS. It scares me that everything might affect might fertility. Of course I know there are other options, but I am still scared. I am a VERY picky eater, so I am wondering if anyone else who is/was a picky eater had any success with any certain cookbook/diet that helped? Thanks in advance,

Re: New to PCOS

  • @IFinTN:  I try to eat a paleo style diet as well...but sometimes I fail.  you're not the only one :)

@erinnfetterman:  Good luck to you.  You might find that once you get your thyroid in order you won't need to increase your exercise.  My husband lost about 15 lbs once they got him settled on his dose of synthroid.  It all takes some time though.  It sounds like you got a lot of info at once but the fact that someone has pinpointed the issues for you is a good thing.  Seeing a RE once you're feeling better will hopefully make you feel less overwhelmed.

  • Is there any reason why paleo is a preferred diet for PCOS women? I understand the low carb, but I'm wondering why not other healthy diet options, like plant-based.

Okay, so can I proselytize about how awesome a veg diet would be for PCOS? ;-) Let the users decide for themselves! A quick google search turned up this:
    https://thekindlife.com/blog/2013/04/treat-pcos-polycystic-ovarian-syndrome-with-vegan-plant-based-diet/
    And this:
    https://www.livestrong.com/article/381328-pcos-and-a-vegan-diet/
    And I'll stop there.

Not challenging your love of meat, or that paleo is a perfectly lovely option, but I have to say for a number of reasons veg seems to me like it would be a better PCOS choice. But what do I know? I'm only "mild" PCOS anyway. (But perhaps I wouldn't be mild if I weren't vegetarian...haha).

PS. Why the HELL are legumes not allowed in Paleo? That seems like total nonsense to me. Vent over.

    ETA: can't type.
