Can I ask a dumb question?

I saw another thread on movement, but didn't want to hijack that post. As I've mentioned, I have AP so I know not to expect to feel a ton of movement or strong movement. However, I am starting to become BEYOND frustrated with not feeling anything (not to mention worried). My question is...if the baby has a healthy heartbeat, is it safe to assume things are fine? Like it's just freaking me out that I'm feeling not a damn thing and I'm ready to scream from frustration.

Re: Can I ask a dumb question?

  • FTM here, but here's my teensy bit if insight:
A couple days ago I asked my midwife when I should start "counting kicks" and she told me they don't even tell people to do that because it can unnecessarily freak people out. She said she would only worry if mom got in a car accident or something.

My OB also said not to formally count kicks.  She said to just be aware if I didn't feel movement when I normally do.

OP, do you have an anterior placenta?

ETA: and she also said not to be concerned until 28 weeks.

  • Yes anterior placenta. I know, I know that means it's not supposed to feel as strong or as much movement, but the lack of reassurance is driving me crazy.

Every single time I talk to ANYONE (esp mom and grandmother), they're always like "oh don't you just love feeling the baby" or "how much is baby moving."
I just want to scream "stop asking me I don't feel a damn thing!"

    It's soo frustrating.
  • I can totally understand why you would be worried ((hugs)). My OB said that at 28 weeks they tell people to expect an active period once per day and before 28 weeks you may or may not feel LO.

Have you felt any movement or is it just infrequent?
  • I wouldn't worry, you'll feel baby soon enough. Just try and be patient!

  • I have an anterior placenta, and I so feel her. However, whenever I'm at the doctor, they always have trouble getting her heartbeat because she's moving too much... And I feel none of it. So I bet I'm feeling only a fraction of her movements. If the heartbeat is good, I wouldn't worry yet. Those of us with anterior placentas will just always feel a little less at this point.
  • Anterior placenta here, too. I finally started feeling what I was sure was baby maybe last week, before that I just couldn't tell if it was gas or not :) Pretty much nothing today, and I've been trying to tell myself not to freak out because between not being 28wks and placenta placement I know I shouldn't be too concerned. Hard, I know! I hate people asking me about movement too, they've been asking since probably 18wks.

One friend told me her oldest was more of a stretcher than a kicker, so that made it even more hard to discern baby from gas, etc especially until much later in the game. I tell myself this is my situation too, just to ease the anxiety :)

Fingers crossed you start feeling something soon! Hang in there!
  • I had a hard time feeling my DS move throughout my entire pregnancy. Sometimes, even at 36 weeks, I would only feel him once every three days or so. Freaked me out all the time, especially after I fell on him at 7 1/2 months. It was very hard for me to feel like he was ok because my DD was very easy to feel. Anyway, DS is 6 now and doing great. As long as LO's heartbeat is strong, I don't think there's any reason to worry.
  • I have an anterior placenta too but didn't with my last pregnancy. HUGE difference! Because I've been pregnant before I recognise the feel of baby kicks/ movements but they are so infrequent that if it was my first pregnancy I wouldn't be sure. I have a Doppler, I have used a few times as I have gone so long with out feeling anything and it helps a ton with piece of mind. You really can't compare expectations with a more normal placement placenta pregnancy, from my experience it is vastly different. Try not to stress about it! I know easier said than done.

  • I have an anterior too and I asked my doctor about movement and she said that they don't even do kick counts until 28 weeks and even then with an anterior it could be less that we feel than others. It's almost as though they have a pillow blocking some of their movements. Hugs to you. I know it's hard. If you have a doppler you can hear baby move and kick and you just might not be feeling it.
  • I had an AP with Sweet Pea.  I mostly felt the big movements; side to side rolling or large shoves and pushes.  You'll feel the baby but it may take more time with an AP
  • Girl you are just having one hellofa hard time with this movement stuff! First not moving after the queso, now this. I think it's frustrating to have people constantly ask you are you going through something in pregnancy and you're not. But as for everything else, you probably just need to breathe deep and read a lot of the movement threads. I know reassurance is great but really if you just relax you could probably feel LO.
I agree with all that you said (I really am struggling with this no movement thing!) except for bolded. Trust me, I lay in bed at night, in the morning, or when relaxing after work on the couch, and I seriously have felt nothing. :(( Maybe as FTM I just don't know what I'm supposed to be feeling, who knows.

With my last, and my 4th, I had an AP and I never felt her. Freaked me out!! She was over 10lbs at birth and I really never felt her kick, and with her being my 4th I knew what it felt like.
Towards around 34 weeks I felt more like waves and rolls but never significant kicks.

Sorry lady, hugs for you. I understand the frustration and worry.

  • This would completely freak me out to. I don't have AP and freak out now about stuff. I am gonna have to say you're not feeling gas like missnacholover stated. I thought it was gas that I was feeling too at first but gas is usually painful. Like ooooo, I gotta poop pain not wth was that!
