Clothes Discussion (maternity, baby, workout etc)

I have a lot of clothes-related things on my mind, so I'm putting them in one post. Answer/contribute to any relevant topics...

-Is everyone totally in maternity wear at this point? How much have you bought maternity or how often do you have to repeat outfits?

-Anyone have any recommendations for cheap workout maternity clothes (ESP sports bras!)

-For those doing a Catholic Baptism (or any type of infant Baptism), any recommendations on where to get the gown?

Re: Clothes Discussion (maternity, baby, workout etc)

  • -Is everyone totally in maternity wear at this point? How much have you bought maternity or how often do you have to repeat outfits?
Yup!  I feel like I wear the same 8 outfits.  I need to go shopping for some fall-ish stuff soon.  At this point I'm just dealing with the same summer clothes I have since we only have a couple of months left.

-Anyone have any recommendations for cheap workout maternity clothes (ESP sports bras!)
    No, sorry.  :(

-For those doing a Catholic Baptism (or any type of infant Baptism), any recommendations on where to get the gown?
I saw a big selection at Buy Buy Baby.

  • -Is everyone totally in maternity wear at this point? How much have you bought maternity or how often do you have to repeat outfits? I am still wearing non-maternity shirts, and SOMETIMES non-maternity bottoms, if I can leave them partially undone. For example, today I have on a regular black skirt, but it is unzipped halfway and I just have a long top covering that. I'm having trouble finding work-appropriate bottoms and I hate to spend a fortune on clothes I'll only be in a few months. I find myself repeating the few outfits that fit quite often!

-Anyone have any recommendations for cheap workout maternity clothes (ESP sports bras!) I just need help in this area. I'm still teaching my fitness classes until the end of the month, so again I hate to invest in anything expensive that won't get much wear. Right now I wear these Nike spandex-y capri pants that fit nicely with the bump, but my shirts are getting short and my sports bra is just making my cleavage look vulgar at this point lol.

-For those doing a Catholic Baptism (or any type of infant Baptism), any recommendations on where to get the gown?
Again, I asked this because I have no idea! I did some google searching, but looking for those who may have gone through this and what they recommend.
  • -Is everyone totally in maternity wear at this point? How much have you bought maternity or how often do you have to repeat outfits?

I wear about 80% maternity.  I have some skirts and tops that look great on my pregnant body, so I will wear them as long as I can.

As for how much I bought...   a fair bit!  2 pairs of long jeans, 1 pair of denim capris, 1 cute denim skirt, a beige miniskirt, 2 pairs of mat leggings (I work out in those now), 1 pair of grey capris....    A few dresses, a few sweaters, lots of sleeveless tops... a coat...

Erm.  Yeah. I bought a lot.

As for how often I repeat outfits?  Well, I only wear the summer stuff now.  Including my regular clothes that still fit, I can probably go at least 2 weeks without repeating an outfit.  (Although I might recycle a skirt of capri pant.)

-Anyone have any recommendations for cheap workout maternity clothes (ESP sports bras!)

I settled on some Old Navy mat leggings.  Cheap, not see-through, comfy and functional.  One pair of Lululemon capris still work ok.  The rest of my workout pants don't feel great.  My regular workout tops still fit - they stretch...  as for bras - I wear Lululemon's Ta Ta Tamers A LOT.  They go on like a regular bra (I hate wiggling in and out of sports bras) and have great support and make your breasts look fabulous.  (no uni-boob.)  They ain't cheap, though.

  • For Christening, I bought DS this for his and plan to get his brother his own (my hope - although maybe silly - is that they would want to keep it for their own children and pass it down someday, so I was willing to spend a bit more.  I will say the quality was beautiful and they come in an heirloom bag to store afterwards.  They have cute unisex, girl, and although the jumpsuits for boys seemed non-traditional, I loved it.  I bought him the jumpsuit, cardigan to put over it, cap, and booties.

  • I have been wearing almost all maternity clothes for probably 2+ months (with the exception of non-maternity maxi dresses).  Even though this is my 3rd pregnancy, I have bought massive amounts of maternity clothes this time, however none of it has been full-price.  The majority of stuff I have bought has been off of a local resale page on Facebook.  I have paid anywhere between $1-$10 an item for jeans, dress pants, dresses, shirts, etc.  I have also bought quite a few dresses off of Zulily.
DH complained about my maternity wear in the first 2 pregnancies so I told him he had to pony up the cash if he wanted me wearing something different :)

I do wear mostly dresses at this point so I do repeat them maybe every 2 weeks (I probably have at least 15 :) )

  • A big thank you to @MrsG1019 who started this thread a couple of weeks ago, I went to the site and ordered 4 shirts and 3 pairs of pants for $37!!!  I live in Canada but in a border town so I got everything shipped to my PO Box in the states and am picking up the clothes tomorrow, I am beyond excited!  The maternity section is HUGE!!

  • @brichar31-can't get the link to open, but is that the ThredUp discussion? If so, I agree! I actually ordered about 8 fall items from there. The condition of the clothes were great (and price!), but some were not as I pictured. For example, I ordered a M in the shirts, and the sleeves feel like they are cutting off my circulation (and my arms aren't that big). I also ordered a pair of work dress pants, and they are labeled regular size, but they HAD to have been hemmed or are shorts, because they are floods on me! Other than those two issues, the other 6 items were great.
  • @JamieK1882 yes its Thredup.com.  My clothes have been delivered to my PO box but I can't get them until tomorrow...I'm anxious to see the condition since second hand and all.  I figured I couldn't go wrong with $37 and if I like them I'll order some fall maternity wear too :)

  • -Is everyone totally in maternity wear at this point? How much have you bought maternity or how often do you have to repeat outfits?

I'm wearing regular shirts, regular casual skirts, and maternity pants. I'm just now starting to pop, but when I start school back in a little over a week, I'll probably be in maternity clothes because my professional wardrobe doesn't fit at all even if my casual clothes do. I have actually purchased a lot of maternity wear, but I just haven't had the opportunity to wear most of it since it's primarily for work.

-For those doing a Catholic Baptism (or any type of infant Baptism), any recommendations on where to get the gown?

My friend's mom gave me a little Baptism cap that she made. It turns into a handkerchief to be carried on the wedding day!

I asked my SIL (who is in fashion design school) and my MIL (who is also an experienced seamstress) to craft a gown for me. I offered to pay for all the materials, but I thought that they would enjoy making the gown since they LIVE for baby clothes. This will actually be the first infant baptism in the family since H and I both come from Credo-Baptism traditions, but we attend a church right now that practices infant baptism, so we're going to participate.

I have found that most department stores and baby clothes shops carry Christening gowns (at least online). I was surprised at how easy they are to find. Another option is to try out Etsy or something for a cute handmade choice.

  • I was just thinking this morning that I need more maternity clothes. I have a few skirts and dresses from before pregnancy that work, but my cleavage is getting vulgar in them. And I only have like 3 work appropriate maternity tops. I need at least a few more to get through not wearing the same outfits every week. Shopping is in order for my weekend!

I haven't transitioned my workout gear yet, but will need to soon. On this subject, does anyone use a support belt when working out? The past few times I've tried to run I feel like the underside of my bump is heavy and have to slow down.

  • I am wearing about 70% all maternity right now. I still have some shirts that do still fit. I also have a couple non maternity maxi's that I am wearing. I repeat outfits probably every two weeks. But I work from home and live in a tank top and yoga pants.

I have bought quite of few pieces: I bought a great pair of jeans. I just hope my hips don't get too much bigger. Lots of tanks. A couple fancier shirts.

For workout wear, I have some yoga pants that still fit. I have been laying tanks. I find that the lulu lemon razorback tanks are long enough to cover my belly and then I put another regular tank over. For bras: I really love the Victoria secret sports bras. But I am slowly getting to big in the rib cage for the ones I have. I bought an under armour one that I love, I just wish it was a razorback instead of regular straps. (Funky tanlines, since my workout class is currently outside.)

For christening gowns: I have seen them in department stores and in the little boutiques.

I wish I had morrrre. But I'm perpetually broke, so haven't gotten much in the way of maternity clothes. I have a few shirts that I've purchased, now that my regular shirts are creeping unacceptably high on my belly - not sure I can pull off the midriff tops right now, lol. Mostly thought, I wear yoga pants (that are accommodatingly stretching with my body), those few maternity shirts I have, and I have several tank tops that were long enough that they're still doing the job. Will probs have to buy more soon, though.
-Anyone have any recommendations for cheap workout maternity clothes (ESP sports bras!)
I don't, alas. I pretty much just wear regular clothes when I workout (yoga pants FTW).

-Is everyone totally in maternity wear at this point? How much have you bought maternity or how often do you have to repeat outfits?
I'm probably about 30% maternity.  All my pants are maternity but all my dresses and tops are non-maternity.  I can go a week maybe 10 days without repeating but I am getting really tired of wearing the same things over and over (I can't mix and match as much with such a limited wardrobe).  I just ordered another pair of pants and a maternity maxi skirt.  I also ordered a few maternity tanks and even a pair of pajama pants today.  Unfortunately I find the side ruching typical of maternity tops very itchy and irritating also, it is really hard to find XS sizes.

My biggest expense this pregnancy has been bras.  Just when I thought I had stopped growing and invested in 4-5 nice bras, the girls got bigger.  Now I'm a "specialty" size.  I'm definitely much more sympathetic to my larger chested friends now (up from a 32 barely B to a full 30 DD with 3 mo to go@-) ).

I'm looking myself. It seems like most models come in S, M, L and that doesn't work for small band large cup.  I'll let you know if I find anything reasonable!

  • Thanks! I like hearing what everyone else is doing..

@moroccojade-I have a lulu sports bra that I bought from this lululemon resale group on fb. I'm not sure if it's the same one you're referring to, but I don't think it gives as much support as the kind that squish your boobs. But maybe it's not sized right for me?

@MrsDL-lots of cute stuff on that site. Thanks!

@brichar31-good luck with thredup. I'm curious to hear how you like your clothes!
  • If I go anywhere I'm definitely in maternity pants or some kind of stretchy material (yoga pants). I have 2 shorts, 1 Capri, and 1 knee high pair. I have bought maybe 4 shirts and I wear them all the time too if I go somewhere. I did make sure all my shirts will be able to be worn after the baby. The bottoms will be nice because of the cloth part over my belly. I've been in the same bras, they are not as loose, but they still work for me.

For workout clothes, yogas have always been my best friend with any of my tank tops. For sports bras, honestly Wal-Mart has some. They are inexpensive so I'm all about that :) plus, they are comfy.

The Ta Ta Tamer is amazing for support, but doesn't squish you so bad that you look gross.   I think it is the only Lulu bra that has hooks on the back.

That is very, very sad.   And it's just not worth it to buy a new one till you find out what size you are post partum (or post nursing.)   My sympathies.

  • 1. I refuse to wear maternity clothes and I'm still not THAT big, so I wear mostly elastic waistbands and empire waist dresses. I repeat all the time. I wrote in another thread about my mom's old gap overalls from when she was pregnant with my sister....I'm in those a lot.

    2. Marshalls or tj maxx has very affordable workout clothes. Target workout pants are small on pregnant butts.

    3. Not something I'm doing but I bet etsy has some precious ones. I also saw a whole rack at carter's.

99% maternity.  I can still wear my "normal" sweatshirts and a couple of bum around the house shirts.  I do a lot of dresses/cardigans, but yeah, I only have like 6 or 7 "outfits" so I wear the same things a lot.
For working out, I've got a few pretty low set (at the waist) calf length yoga pants I can still wear for working out.  Old Navy has some workout stuff in their maternity section and I got a shirt from there, and I ordered a shirt from Amazon (jessica Simpson's line, actually) and like both of them.  I am still wearing my regular sports bras.  I tried going up a size, but they were really loose.  I think it's more about rib size than cup size with a sports bra.  I bought a maternity tankini top at Target that I wear with regular bikini bottoms when I want to swim.

I got A's baptism outfit off Amazon.

  • JamieK1882 - What kind of fitness class do you teach?  I teach Zumba, but my class ended in May so I haven't been teaching since then.

Is everyone totally in maternity wear at this point? How much have you bought maternity or how often do you have to repeat outfits? - I would say I'm in 80% maternity wear at this point. I was lucky to get a bunch of stuff from a friend who was pregnant a few years ago.  I can't use all of it - she was bustier before getting pregnant than I am now at 27 weeks - but I got a few dresses, some jeans, and tops.  I've bought a few things from Old Navy, Kohl's (Kohl's Cash FTW) and I just splurged on 3 new t-shirts this week.  I'm repeating some things weekly.  My office dress code is very casual but I don't feel comfortable wearing yoga pants here.  Give me 2 more months though and I'm sure I won't care anymore!

Anyone have any recommendations for cheap workout maternity clothes (ESP sports bras!) - Glad to see some recommendations here.  I'm in vulgar cleavage territory when I try to wear my pre-preggo sports bras, with the exception of my VS one (which I am having problems reaching around my back to fasten) and a hot pink American Eagle one that is more stretchy.

-For those doing a Catholic Baptism (or any type of infant Baptism), any recommendations on where to get the gown? - I'm no help but it raises an interesting question for me.  I haven't thought about this yet, DH is a Christian who doesn't attend church, I am a UU Pagan, we were married by a Buddhist.  The Unitarian Universalist Church I go to does a Welcoming ritual for babies, but I don't think we'll make a big deal out of it as I think my in-laws would be uncomfortable.  They won't push us to have a traditional baptism/Christening either though, that's not their way.  Who knows? I'm glad this came up though, I will talk to DH about it.

  • @highbornhunter-I teach a zumba/hip hop class twice a week at LA Fitness. I'm still teaching, but my class is pretty high impact and it just drains me right now. Like, the days I teach, I need a nap afterwards and I'm exhausted. I just told my boss my last one would be the end of this month. I hope to go back sometime in the early new year, though.
  • @JamieK1882 - Well I think you are amazing because I cannot imagine teaching a class going full out right now. ^:)^   I'm barely making it to a Zumba or Hip Hop class once week at present.  I'm mainly sticking with Gentle Yoga (which does feel soooo good).  There are contributing factors to that though, there have been some changes with instructors at the gym that I go to.

Just wanted to update.  I got my new old navy skinny full panel maternity jeans this weekend.  THEY ARE AWESOME!  Way better than my expensive designer ones (I got them on sale).  Oh my gosh, they actually fit my butt AND my thighs and by the end of the day no saggy butt.  I can't even tell you how much better they made me feel about myself.

I cried trying to get ready for my niece's first birthday because nothing fit right and of course my skin is a disaster and I just didn't want to go.

I also got my first fold over maxi skirt and it looks really comfy and a I have a couple of tops coming on wednesday, can't wait.  After my meltdown this weekend you know what, I don't care if I will only be wearing the maternity stuff for a few more months, it's worth it to buy a few nice, well fitting things.

  • I pretty much re wear a lot of my maternity outfits because i dont want to over spend (and boy is it easy seeing the cute clothes at pea in the pod!). For sportswear, i bought one of the belly pant crops, and a couple of spandexy tanks from target maternity--those work fine because I'm not sweating like crazy during the pregnancy. Sports bras, i just buy regular in a size up.

One pair of preggers jeans, 4-5 assorted tops for going out, and one belly band to cover up unzipped regular jeans.
  • -Is everyone totally in maternity wear at this point? How much have you bought maternity or how often do you have to repeat outfits?
Yes, mostly except for a few non-maternity lounge clothes, tops, maxi dresses and a couple of skirts. I haven't bought anything for this pregnancy except a couple of tops that were super on sale and a pair of capris because I caught my others on a hinge and tore them... grrr. I repeat maternity bottoms a lot because I don't have many and dresses because it's so hot. I'm hoping to only need to buy a pair of jeans for the fall and then layer my many non-maternity cardigans over my tees and summer tops.

-Anyone have any recommendations for cheap workout maternity clothes (ESP sports bras!)
Not really. My yoga pants are mostly non-maternity but I have a pair of maternity from Target and old navy. I wear my regular sports bras.

A couple of the boutiques where I shop for DD carry them.

I haven't bought anything maternity yet except for those wonderful belly bands. I just haven't been able to find anything I like that's a) cute and b) cheap enough that I don't feel guilty buying for short time wear. What I have been doing is buying normal clothes a size bigger. Lots of Target and lots of H&M.

    No idea!

I'm taken sections from my wedding dress and my mother's and making the gown out of that. I used to work in bridal alterations and we did this to a few a gowns and they turned out gorgeous. I highly recommend it.

    * I got a few workout things from Old Navy and Motherhood Maternity, but no sports bras.
*I've seen some online but can't remember where...sorry, I'm not much help
