Infertility

f/u to my post about tax deductible stuff...

I found this document, https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf.  On page 30, it says that non-prescription meds (like aspirin) can't be deducted.  I take that to also mean tylenol, OTC vitamins, etc...even if suggested by a doctor.

Thoughts??

Re: f/u to my post about tax deductible stuff...

  • I've always given my accountant totals for otc meds, vitamins, etc.  I thought it was deductible.  I think rules can change year to year or maybe it is deductible for state and not for fed?  they don't always have the same rules.

I'm totaling it all again this year and I'll see what they say.  I'm writing off any I possibly can.

  • My H said he's deducted everything in the past.  They may have changed the rules recently.

I don't save my receipts for otc stuff so I wouldn't be able to deduct anything.

  • What you found on irs.gov is correct, and I don't think the rules have changed recently. People may be confused because OTC meds such as tylenol etc. are reimbursable for flex spending accounts and health savings accounts. The guidelines for FSAs and HSAs are broader than they are for income taxes. HTH!
