1st Trimester

6 weeks pregnant, but tested positive at 2 weeks?

I had my 8 weeks pregnant appointment today, and they did the first ultrasound to find the heartbeat. The doctor barely found the little embryo, told me I was way earlier along than they had anticipated. She said I was six weeks pregnant. I took three pregnancy tests almost four weeks ago (3 weeks, 5 days), and they all came out strongly positive. Not just a faint line, but very clear. But I would have only been two weeks pregnant back then, which isn't really pregnant as you barely have conceived then. I'm worried something is wrong, and that maybe the embryo stopped growing or something else is wrong. Is there something I'm missing?

For those who think I should just talk to my doctor, I tried calling my doctor back, but they just want me to get an ultrasound from another place done, one that can see more and tell me if something is wrong. I would do that right away of course, but I have the worst deductible on my insurance and I'm going to have to find the money to save up in order to get that ultrasound. I'm just trying to find any information or comfort or any stories out there like mine until I'm able to get this resolved, as I have no one to talk to right now.

  • How dark the line is isn't an indication if how far along you are. I had a very dark line and thought I was already 5 weeks. I was maybe 4 weeks exactly.

I'm terrible at math. What was the actual date you got a positive? I got my first positive on July 8th. I'm exactly 7 weeks today. Regardless, I wouldn't pay to have another ultrasound before 1 week goes by. After a week you'll definitely be able to see if there was growth.

Fingers crossed for you. Don't be afraid to reach out here- unfortunately many of us have experienced loss and know the anxiety of the first few weeks. Take care of yourself!

  • My first positive test was on July 4th. I took two more tests on the same day, all pretty positive. I figured that's why I had to be farther than six weeks along if that was the case. No way I could have had a positive pregnancy test almost four weeks ago. It just doesn't make sense.
  • My first positive test was on July 1st (so 3 days before you) and I am 7 weeks 5 days today.  Maybe ask your doctor for a blood draw to see what your betas are doing?

  • Yes, it would not be possible to get a positive pregnancy test at 2 weeks, you're right about that.  The earliest is maybe 7DPO which puts you at 3 weeks.  There could be lots of reasons for the measurement being smaller.  There is a margin of error (although it's small at this point) that could wiggle it a day or two.  Then perhaps she measured wrong or didn't get a good enough angle.  It's really hard to say.  From the response you were given it sounds like they don't have very good equipment and don't really know what they are doing.  At least that's what it sounds like to me.  I'd personally see if you can find another doctor and just start over with them.  The one you have does not sound like someone I'd be comfortable with given that response.  Try not to stress about it in the meantime.
