We will be closing on house soon and I want to redo kitchen almost immediately. However, I want someone to come in and help design the layout. I figure if I call a general contractor and say I want to knock down this wall they will say ok but not advise me if aesthetically that is best choice. Is that an interior designer? I am not really asking for color schemes and stuff like that. Do contractors have people to help me with design layout?
You want a design build firm. Generally there would be 2 phases/contracts. A design phase where you work out all your ideas which would culminate in an estimate based on the final design, followed by the construction phase. The benefit is that fewer things slip through the cracks because they are accountable for their design and the estimate.

Interior designer for aesthetics, some architects can help in this area (they are more big picture with layouts and ensuring the proper codes are met). They should be able to help guide you to an appropriate contractor. If you're knocking down walls they will be able to contact the right people and get the right permits. A contractor should be able to complete this without hiring an engineer, although this also depends on your local laws. Some municipalities require a PE seal on some work.
When we redid our kitchen we went to our local granite counter place that also sold cabinets. They had a lady there who helped with our entire design and cabinet layout. We removed a soffit and added some cabinets along existing walls, no major structural changes. We did all of the drywall and floor installations ourselves and just had their contractor come install the cabinets, counters, and appliances.
If you have any questions later about anything they are doing structurally feel free to PM me.
I agree with the PPs to find a contractor who specializes in kitchen/bath. My dad is a contractor and definitely has an eye for layout and design. He redid my parents whole house when they bought it as a fixer upper and it is awesome. So you can probably skip the interior designer if you're trying to keep to a budget because contractors definitely have the capability if you find the right one
Lol @etoille and @BetsyD2010 l just loaded that app. Probably not a good idea! I tell my DH I am not fancy person the less expensive option is usually fine. Then I see pictures and all that is shot to shitz. For example cabinets I just wanted standard pre fabricated until i saw a pantry with shelves that pull out...that is now a must have!
@queenbone didn't mean to imply that. I just didn't know if there was different terminology to different levels ie. Designer vs decorator because I have heard both titles. Also, in general what all an interior designer could do? This is my first experience needing on personally.
