cribs

Hi there!

Curious about crib recommendations? We've been reading on ConsumerReports and scouring websites to figure out the best crib under around $350 (would love to spend less). I like white, and simple lines. Converting to a toddler bed is a plus but not necessary. Any suggestions? How serious should I take ConsumerReports? I feel like I'm overthinking it....

Re: cribs

  • Consumer Reports is a good starting point, but they only review a few of what's out there. We went with the Kendall from PBK, not because it was on the report, but because they had a low profile crib that is great for a short girl like me.

I second checking into Ikea. If you like clean simple lines, they have some great options at great prices.

  • We are reusing the one we got in 2012 for our first child. We are just transitioning him out of it currently and it has held up really great. He didn't end up chewing on it (some kids do that when teething) so it looks brand new. It was a Baby Mod crib from Wal-Mart and even has a drawer underneath. They still carry the same one for under $300.

  • I bought a graco crib in the dark finish from target in 2011 for dd2. It has held up amazingly and was under $200 I believe. We have moved it several times and it is easy to take down and put back up, which is good because it is currently in the closet until the new one is ready to use it.

I would say whatever you like and fits into your budget is what you should buy!
  • According to Baby Bargains (book and website) here are the recommended bargain cribs (I didn't check if they're white):
    Fisher price Newbury- 150-180
    Fisher price Charlotte- 160-180
    Graco Stanton - 150-160
    IKEA Sniglar- 70
    IKEA Gulliver- 100-130

I'm not sure if any of these are carried at BRU but they're having a sale through 7/31 on nursery furniture.

We got the Fisher Price Charlotte and it looks very nice and classic.  In my opinion, it looks like it costs more than it does.
  • I got a Carter's convertible 4 in 1. It also came with a changing table for $200. Since DD needed a toddler bed and we need a crib for DS, we bought DD a new bed and giving the crib to DS and we will use the toddler bed assembley (which you have to buy seperate) when he needs it.
  • it's always good to do your research but you might be overthinking it just a little bit.  Any standard crib built to today's safety regulations should do you justice, after that, it's just a matter of style preference.  Good luck!

I totally did the Consumer Reports thing before deciding that I was way overthinking the whole issue. I bought a crib and dresser at Target last week with my mom. The deciding factors ending up being aesthetics, sturdiness and the fact that they were in stock. My local Buy Buy Baby said their cribs could take up to 8 weeks for delivery, and that was too close to game time for my comfort!
  • I got a white delta bentley crib from Target due to amazing reviews and an amazing sale/coupon opportunities during the week we got it. It was under 200, really easy to put together and has the toddler conversion option. I also made sure that the mattress we got later on fit nice and snug with no gaps to make it safer for our LO

  • We have the IKEA Gulliver. My son used it for 20 months and my niece has been using it since then, so it's had 3.5 years of continuous use and it's still in perfect condition.

  • We have Ikea Gulliver and mattress from The Futon Shop that doesn't have ANY chemicals (fire retardants) in it. The Futon Shop gives you option to opt out even borate with your doctor's note so we did it. I think mattress is more important than a crib itself.
  • we actually got ours thru baby depot at burlington coat factory. It's a suite bebe which is made by a ligit European furniture company that i can't remember the name of. It's awesome, and was cheeper than what i was going to get at BRU (we spent 230??). and it's a better quality wood than what i was going to get from BRU.

    Good Luck

  • We have the Baby Mod Olivia crib for $269. The Baby Mod line at Walmart is modern and sleek and they have a few different options at affordable prices. https://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=baby+mod+crib&ic=16_0&Find=Find&search_constraint=5427
