Honey I shrunk the baby clothes

We had our shower this weekend and naturally got a bunch of baby clothes. We started washing our newborn - 3 to 6 month stuff. However pretty much everything shrunk! I washed on cold water and dried on delicate cycle to hopefully avoid shrinking. Unfortunately that's not what happened. Now I have newborn stuff that's the size of preemie and 0-3 month clothes the size of newborn. Any one have any advice on how to keep them from shrinking? I feel extremely overwhelmed and frustrated by this because now he has some clothes that don't fit at all and some that he will probably wear once. Plus I feel bad because people spent their money to buy these clothes and now he may not get the chance to wear them. I'm pretty sure exchanging them is no longer and option ... HELP PLEASE!!!

  • Maybe they are sized in preparation for shrinking? Or tumble dry with no heat.

  • Don't be alarmed all baby clothes shrink. I never had an item of DS's shrink too much to where it did not fit him.

  • Most companies make clothes knowing they will shrink. Don't worry.

  • Unless your baby comes out well over 9lbs and super long, I would think even the nb size would fit for a short time. You'll be surprised just how small babies are and how crazy clothing sizes are. My kids were 6lb15oz 20 in and 7lb15oz 21in and one fit preemie for a while and the other nb for quite some time.
  • I freaked out last time thinking I had shrunk all the baby clothes too. Turns out they are supposed to shrink and everything fit just fine.

  • Thank you ladies. I feel better knowing I didn't ruin all his clothes. You guys are great haha :) but I think in the future I will be more cautious of the stuff that is 100% cotton and hang dry those lol
  • This just happened to me also. My mom told me to dry on delicate, so I did. And they still came out ridiculously small! I have sooooooo many 3 month clothes that I swear he could come home from the hospital in. But I'm hoping I'm just a crazy FTM and don't know what I'm talking about haha glad to see some posts that it will still fit and be ok!
  • This makes me feel so much better. Just did our first load last night and I was a bit nervous about how small the clothes seemed. So glad to hear I am not the only one!

  • Don't fret.  My DS was nearly 9# and I had to go buy some NB sleepers because we were certain he'd be too big for NB (now, he wasn't in them for a long time, but we did need them!)... even big babies are smaller than you think!
