1st Trimester

Worried about Preeclampsia

I had post-partum preeclampsia with my 2nd baby (he was perfect, thank the stars) 2 years ago & nearly died.  Now, I'm almost 8 weeks along with my 3rd baby & I'm considered high risk.  For a week I've had migraines & horrible headaches, crazy nausea, dizziness, light fevers, and my weight gain has skyrocketed.  When I read up on preeclampsia symptoms, it looks like I'm headed for it again but my checkup isn't until next Monday.  Am I just having a horrible 1st trimester?  Can preeclampsia even kick in this early?   I am not a panicky person, but I don't want to overlook something potentially serious.  Anyone out there dealing with preeclampsia?  A little insight?

Re: Worried about Preeclampsia

  • All the symptoms you're describing sound a lot like typical first tri problems. The weight gain could just be bloating from the influx of hormones. My bp has been pretty high for almost my entire pregnancy (flirting with that 140/90 line) so I just make a habit to check my bp whenever I'm at a store that has a bp machine. You could try doing that if you don't have a way to check your blood pressure at home. It gives me peace of mind since it's always lower there then at the doctor's office. If you're really worried, then call your doctor.

  • Definitely talk to your doctor.   I had pre-e with my first and they are going to determine whether I am at a higher risk this time around and whether they are going to put me on baby aspirin.  Don't stress because that would only make your BP worse.
  • Pre-e is more than just high blood pressure. It also requires the protein spilling into your urine due to kidney issues. Pre-e normally doesn't kick in until Trimester 2 or 3 - I had it onset at 33.5 weeks with Baby #1. Because mine came on after 30 weeks, I am not considered high risk by my doctor, although she has me on every vitamin and supplement that has been shown to lessen the chances of pre-e.

Continue to go to your doctor's exams and follow their directions. I know in the first trimester I have been winded, tired, and had headaches quite often.I think those are fairly common symptoms.

I hope you don't have all those issues again!!
