Boy moms: Kitchens?

We just moved in to our new home and finally have the space to have a play kitchen. DH may have an issue with it but my boys almost  2 and 4 are always in the kitchen with me and I think they would enjoy it. My 4 year old had a workshop and he ended up pretending that was a kitchen. Does anyone have a kitchen for their boys and if so do they enjoy it?

Re: Boy moms: Kitchens?

  • My son LOVES his sisters kitchen. We also have a grill outside that he loves. So if your husband has an issue, maybe look into finding a grill, or kitchen set that includes a grill. But being a chef is not girly. Tons of the famous chefs are men.

Yes, yes, yes.  I hate that this is even a discussion.  In our house DH actually does 90% of the cooking, so our boys have never even thought of cooking as a "girl" thing.  We have a step2 kitchen and the boys love it.

DS1 used to "cook" for me all the time.  We've had ours for over 3 years and DS1 still plays with it.

We have a slightly smaller version of this one: https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-124430/step2-lifestyle-deluxe-kitchen.jsp?

ETA: I didn't mean that I hate that you brought up the discussion - just that people have that stereotype to begin with.

  • We have an older step 2 lifestyle deluxe kitchen that both my kids ( girl & boy) equally enjoy.

The colors are not "girly", if that matters.

  • We have this one. DS loves it just as much as DD. I think it's crazy that boys can't have kitchens in this day and age. It never even crossed my mind that this was too domestic for DS.

  • Jasper LOVES his kitchen! The colors aren't girly, but I would've gotten it even if they had been. He loves making us breakfast-- eggs and pancakes (3 white balls and the tops of hamburger buns from a food set we were given). It's excellent for creative play.
  • DS loves his kitchen. He plays in it all the time.

This is the one we have too. My boys play with it all the time. I bought it when DS1 was 12 months old. Honestly, at this point (2 years old), if I were buying a play kitchen I would get a taller one. This one is great for 1-2 year olds but it is pretty small for 3-4 year olds even though my 3 year old still plays with it.

  • My son loves pretend cooking - he has a bunch of pretend food to play with and we got him the little tikes grill for Easter.   He grills every day - he even insists on dragging it outside to grill with daddy. :)

I wanted to get him a kitchen however my husband wanted to hold off until he was a bit bigger (he was worried he could pull it over on top of himself at age one...).  So it might be his big birthday or Christmas present!.  The one we are looking would have the following features as I have discovered they are must have from friends play kitchens:  a microwave with buttons, a little sink, oven that is wide enough to fit a pan and a small fridge and sink.

boys can definiately have kitchens - maybe just not a pink one :)

  • My son still plays in the toy kitchen, and he's 7. Cooking is not girly, and even if it was, I wouldn't care at all if he wanted to do it.

The wooden kidkraft kitchen came with a wall anchor, which is part of why we were comfortable getting it when our LOs were so young.

Well after seeing how much he loves his grill and "cooks" every day we are shopping a play kitchen now.  I will put that one on my list to look at :)

  • Our boys had the toy kitchen and a toy grill before their little sister came along.  They love cooking!  Especially grilling.  We put their little toy grill on the patio and got them the little tongs and everything.  :)

  • Yep. Our play kitchen was SDs so it is older but it is Colby's favorite toy in the playroom :)

  • I have girls, but just want to throw in that my 10 year old neighbor loved playing in our kid craft uptown kitchen when he's at our house. He tells DD "I'm Gordon Ramsey, you can try to be the master chef" and this kid is ALL BOY, (he plays goalie on a bunch of hockey teams which is a big deal in MN)

  • We have had a Step2 one (bought it because it was a Craigslist find and he loves it) since he was about a year. So much good, functional pretend play!

  • My son loves his still. Whenever we go to other people's houses, he plays with their kitchens too. It is great pretend play. Fwiw, I also cook with his help some and my husband enjoys cooking.

  • Thanks everyone I have decided to get them one for the holidays if not sooner. DH will probably be annoyed but I know our boys will love it. My 4 year old spends lots of time in the kitchen at daycare.

Get them a small grill for outside too. Best of both worlds :-)

Why?  Your DH sounds like a jerk to be honest.  I hope you raise your boys better than that.
LOL, DH is not a jerk this is the same man who brought our son a cabbage patch (boy) so he would stop fighting his niece for her's. He's just set in his ways on certain things. We disagree on all sorts of things for our boys but he's a great dad.
