Baby Names

Estelle opinions?

My husband recently lost his grandmother, and it is very important to him (and to me) to honor her memory if we adopt a little girl. Her name was Estelle, but she went by Stella, which i LOVE, but it seems super trendy at the moment. Someone else had also suggested just using the name Estelle and calling her Ellie as a nn. What are your thoughts?

1. Estelle nn Ellie.
2. Just plain Estelle.
3. Just plain Stella.
4. other?
trying for #1 since May 2012... we're adopting! bringing home baby boy in january 2015!

Re: Estelle opinions?

  • Estelle is lovely!  I like Stella too, but I also agree that is does seem trendy, though not as trendy as Ellie.  What about calling her Estee (like Estee Lauder?)  Or just Elle?

There's also Estela-- which nicely lends itself to the NN Stella.

  • I prefer Stella, I agree with PPs that an Ellie nn is way more popular than Stella.

  • Estelle is amazing! I would totally use that as the FN.  Don't worry about NNs just yet.  You'll see what comes more naturally to you when she arrives.  Good luck with the adoption!

i agree with all of this
  • Estelle is two syllables, so I don't see why it needs a nn. It's lovely on its own.

Estelle is beautiful and uncommon. I'd just call her that. I do love Stella as well, and agree that its heaps better and less common than Ellie
  • Just Estelle. NN will come naturally once she is here.

    VOTE on my Name List

  • I'd follow grandma's lead and name her Estelle and call her Stella as a nickname.
  • I love Estelle. I'd go with that and like others said just let nicknames come on their own.

  • I have a Stella and a lot of the time we just NN her Stell. We tossed around the idea of Estelle but stuck with Stella. We get a lot of compliments on how nice it is.

  • I looooooooooooooooooove Estelle
  • If you are going to honor his grandmother than honor her.  Her name was Estelle.

I vote for Estelle and then nickname her Stella if you want.  Just like his granny was called.
  • Love Estelle nn Stella. Not at all trendy

  • Estelle is pretty. I agree with the post above that suggests going with the full name and letting the nickname come naturally. (I actually like all of the nickname suggestions too, but especially Estee and Stella)
  • I prefer either Estella or Stella (no nn), though personally I like Stella more.
  • Stella for me

Recently became friends with a totally bad-ass adult woman named Estelle, so I think the name is awesome!
