Best bottles to avoid nipple confusion - back to work and nursing

Any recommendations for bottles to help prevent nipple confusion? I had so much trouble nursing, I'm scared the bottle feeding will mess up our progress. I'm going back to work and just want some recommendations for best bottles that help avoid nipple confusion. My LO is 4 months. Thank u!

  • Thanks! I'll look up the pacing thing... I don't know about that. He hasn't had a bottle since 2 weeks... It's been a while.

  • here's the link about how to bottle-feed the breastfed baby: https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/feeding-tools/bottle-feeding/ there is a PDF printout that you can give to your care provider as well.

an important point is to stay on the lowest flow nipple as long as possible. you can even stay on the newborn/lowest flow nipple the entire time your baby is taking a bottle (assuming they don't get frustrated). if you're using a fast-flow nipple, where little effort is required to get the milk out, they develop a preference for the bottle over the breast.

we used tommee tipppee bottles for DS and had no issues. he stayed on the lowest flow/newborn nipple until we moved on to cups.

I'm just a lurker here but I will say that DS has been bottle fed on both the Avent and Medela with no issues. He is 12 weeks now and in daycare. That being said it does depend on the babe.

    Eta posted too soon.

  • Thank you! I know everyone is different and who knows what he will end up liking but I really appreciate the responses! :)
  • At 4 months it may be very difficult getting him to accept a bottle. I'd try a few different kinds before investing in a bunch. Good luck!

  • After the medela slow flows were too fast (we tried at 5 weeks old), I got a pack of the playtex ventaire wide bottles because they were the cheapest per bottle (but still good quality).  She took to them immediately and I was happy to not be paying as much as some of the other top brands cost!
  • I second the Tommee Tippe slow flow (0+). Stayed on that nipple flow until switching completely to sippy cups.

  • We use Dr. Brown's bottles + newborn nipples, even as he has gotten older.  He has no problems with nipple confusion at all.  We introduced the bottle at 1 month to try.  I went back to work when he was about 9 weeks.  I have never had any problems with nipple confusion.  I have really liked the Dr. Brown's venting system etc, which is why I chose that bottle.  I didn't give a lot of thought to the nipple, but it has worked really well for us.

Thanks. Did you use the wide mouth or the regular bottles?
  • i started with the medela calma - LO tolerated it for 2 weeks before she changed her mind.  we then switched to the regular medela slow flow and she's been good with it for the most part. we had tried the tommee tipped for a few days when we had a few bumps in the road but LO hated that too

  • We use Dr. Browns but with the preemie nipple for even slower flow (the newborn nipples are too fast flow for my little guy). You can only find the preemie nipples at baby stores.
