NBR CP: Have you ever been summoned for jury duty?

I just received my first notice in the mail and report at the end of the month. I always hear about how people dread receiving the summons but I don't think it sounds so bad. Has anyone else ever had it? Anyone want to share their experience? I'm also curious about breaks in the day so I can pump, although I realize that may be more localized for each county.

SS here. I was summoned but in a state I no longer lived in. Called and told them I relocated and that was that.

  • I've been called prob 6-7 times. Have only made it to voir dire once but then ended up on a trial for a month. It was a time suck. I got called recently (while EBF) and was legitimately concerned about how pumping would work. My guess is it would get you excused.

  • Served on federal court. It was before I was pregnant. You can ask to delay it and give the reason that you are bf. Not sure if they will allow it but worth calling and asking. It might even be an option on the form (at least if you are a SAHM, I believe). I know I was able to request for a delay when I was pregnant and was summoned again. I don't remember, but don't think there were many breaks, at least on the case I was on. I actually liked jury duty and getting away from work for a few days.

  • I was summoned for a special jury pool for a murder trial. After the first day of voir dire, the defendant decided to plead guilty. If it had gone to trial, I doubt I would have made the jury since I work for the prosecutor's office.

As for the breastfeeding issue, I know that the judge in this case was willing to dismiss almost anyone who had a hardship since it was going to be a six week trial. There were two women who were dismissed because they were breastfeeding and even more who were dismissed because they did not think they could find childcare.
  • Nope and I was told by college professors I can't serve because I went to school for crime scene investigation and they won't let anyone in that area be a juror.
  • I was summoned for federal court, my first time. They sent a packet to me in the mail and I had to check once a week for a certain amount of time. I had actually stopped checking and then received a letter saying I had to be there the following Monday. Oops. I didn't end up being picked though. My winter quarter classes had just started and I had also just started a new job.

I got summoned but got notice that it was cancelled before it even got to jury selection.

  • I got summoned recently but told them i didn't have child care and was excused. I'm sure they'd excuse you for breastfeeding because you're the only person that can provide that for your LO.

  • I was summoned about a month before exams. I was teaching all math and responded telling them I was not comfortable leaving my students so close to exam time. They excused me.
  • I feel like I'm gonna be summoned because I opened this thread and did not have to do Jury duty ever.

@RedSaffron -- I commented on FB last summer about how I had never been called (on a friend's post). I received my juror questionnaire 2 weeks later and was summoned 6 weeks after that.

    Big Brother is definitely watching.

But yes, I actually talked about it here. I was summoned last year when I was 5 months pregnant. Ultimately, I wouldn't have minded serving, but I was excused during the first round of jury selection. For me, there was a chance to go up and talk to the judge about any special circumstances. But I agree with others, it's worth calling to find out if you can postpone. The thing for me was that I was afraid that the timing would be worse if I postponed, so I just got it over with.
  • I have never been summoned as was told in grad school that if I ever was, I would most likely never get picked to be on a jury because of having a masters degree in clinical psychology.

  • I was summoned once and ended up on the jury for a criminal case in county court.  Anyone who had potential conflicts or reasons they thought they could not serve was allowed to go up and speak to the judge.

This was over 5 years ago, so my memory is a little vague, but I believe we had a 1 hr lunch break.  I don't think we had any other breaks, but we usually sat around waiting for quite a while each morning.  We also were let go early some days because they had finished with all of the witnesses that had been called in for the day.  At the end, we were sequestered for the day to make our decision, so that may make pumping a challenge.

I would definitely call ahead and explain your situation if you can, and if not, bring it up with the judge when you arrive.

  • I was summoned once while in my first year of college.  I just marked the box for requesting exempt and wrote in the provided area that I was still a student attending classes and that I would like to be excused.  I was excused.  I just got another one a month ago.  One of the exempt check boxes was for nursing mothers.  It asked for a later date that you would be available to serve and I wrote that I was nursing for an indefinate amount of time and couldn't give a date.  I was exempted from that one as well.

  • I was summoned but never picked while pregnant with both DD1 and DD2. They seem to KNOW when I'm pregnant.

  • Thank you for the replies everyone.  Part of me just wants to do it and get it over with since this time of year is actually pretty convenient, aside from the breastfeeding issue.  I can power pump during just a lunch break if need be.  For those of you who have served, did you just need to be there from like 9-5 and then could go home?  I do have an option for a postponement but I don't think there would be a better time than summer since I am a teacher.

If I remember correctly, they try to be done at 5 but if things were in the middle of something, we had to stay. Like the last day when we were deciding the verdict, we had to either all stay until we made a decision or come back the next day. Think we finished closer to 6 that day. But keep in mind, I think jury duty works the same way everywhere, you usually have to call a few nights and may not even have to go. Then if you do go, they often release lots of people after calling so many in the room. Then they pick however many they need. Once in the courtroom, some of us sat in the jury seats and some in the audience area. The majority of us picked were already in the jury box. Just remember, actually getting picked is still a process and you may not get far. However, if you do end up answering questions in the courtroom to possibly be selected, know now they looooooove having teachers on the jury!
