moms of 3 or more financial question

My fiancé & I are expecting our 3rd munchkin.  As overjoyed as we are, this was not planned & we're not in a great financial position right now.  He's in the process of immigrating to the US from England & his work visa hasn't gone through yet...I'm supporting us all right now, but with a new baby we might go under if that visa doesn't go through soon (immigration doesn't indicate an expected date, oh so helpful).  I'm terrified.  My question is to the moms of 3 or more...HOW THE HELL DO YOU AFFORD IT?  I mean, we have a 2 y/o so we have all our gear & stuff, but do we just eat a lot of Ramen?  I can budget with the best of them, but some tips would really put my mind at ease.

I will have to poke around on my bookmarks to find the budgeting blogs I like, but i have 4 & am pg with # 5. If on one income, I honestly am not certain we could swing it. The only thing that helps is that we work opposing shifts, never are off at the same time unless one of us is sick or on vacation, and rarely overlap which would require childcare & significant cost.

I hope his visa goes through, and congrats on the new baby! :-D

  • Thanks so much mommy5point0, and congratulations on your new little one, too.   We know the visa will go through, it's just a question of when at this point.  Those blogs would be super helpful, thanks so much again!

  • I am a SAHM so no daycare costs (and daycare is RIDICULOUS here). We have 2 boys and their birthdays are close together, so we didn't have to buy any clothes for #2. We also had all the gear from our first. All we bought for our #2 was a crib and dresser/nursery decor which we mostly got at IKEA for a great price. I BF for 7 months so that saved us as well.

This is surprise baby #3 for us. We are going to be moving soon after he or she is born so we are waiting to buy nursery stuff (just going to do a pack n play in #2's room along with using one his drawers for baby clothes). We still have baby gear leftover from #1 and #2 that will get used again.

If it's a girl we will have to buy clothes and I am also not going to be BFing this time (medical issue) so the biggest cost will be formula.

  • When I had only three kid and my husband was unemployed I borrowed Miserly Moms by Jonni McCoy from my local library. It had lots of tips for saving money.
