How much milk?

Jasper loves milk. Like, it is his reason for living (that, and Bubble Guppies). If he drank as much milk as he asked for (sometimes I insist that he have water, which he usually just dumps on the floor or himself) he would easily have 12-15 glasses of milk a day.  He doesn't sip it, either-- he guzzles the entire glass and then asks for more. We use almond milk, so giving him that much isn't feasible as we would go through a half gallon+ every day, and $30 a week in milk is nuts, no?

How much milk is your LO getting/wanting?

  • Holy toledo that's a lot of milk! I wish my kids liked milk that much! Keagan gets cereal in the morning, some other form of dairy at lunch (usually a cheese stick because it's so easy) and then a 6 ounce glass of milk with his dinner. Colby has yogurt with his breakfast every day, some sort of dairy at lunch (he won't do cheese sticks so usually a pile of shredded cheese) and then a 4 ounce glass of milk with dinner. I don't limit dairy in any of our meals, they eat grilled cheese, quesadillas, or shredded cheese on top of a lot of our dinner meals. They never ask for milk other than their dinner cup. I know that we are on the lower side of dairy intake but it messes with their bellies if I give them much more than that.

  • DS loves milk too. He'll take that over anything else. Even though his anything else is water. We'll give him orange juice rarely. He gets probably 5-6 sippy cups of milk a day. I'm assuming that's about 6 oz  so 30-36 oz a day. We go through a little over a gallon a week for him in vitamin D milk.

  • I offer milk at all meals; snack time is water. Sometimes we go through just one cup all day. Other days, he asks for more. I buy a gallon of whole milk every other week. Will eats yogurt and cheese to get in his calcium.

  • DD has 2-3 cups a day. If she drinks more than that, she doesn't eat her food, so I limit it to just at mealtime. Otherwise, she gets water, but neither of my kids is big on water.

I have to limit DS intake.  Pedi said no more than 24 oz. a day so...He will ususally drink 2 glasses in the morning and one right after he gets up from a nap.  Other than that water is available all day.  If it were up to him he'd only drink milk.

  • L doesn't drink more than 2 glasses a day and that is on the high side. Max - 12 oz.

She is not a big drinker in general and gets her calcium through food usually.

  • 6oz milk, 2oz cheese and 4-5 oz of yogurt.

  • Dex gets 2 glasses a day, too.  12-15oz.  He would live on milk too if I let him so I only let him have it twice a day now.  Since I cut back on how much milk he gets he's actually been eating a little more at each sitting now.  It was rough at first but he's gotten the hang of it.

  • I'd say both of mine drink18-24 oz. a day. They drink milk almost exclusively. We are trying to get some water in them too, but it's a struggle
  • Our pedi has never said anything about limiting milk...

For a while he was drinking A LOT of milk but we have cut back and try to encourage water. He just isn't a big water fan. He probably has the max amount everyday. I have started giving him a smaller sippy in the morning/night (I think it holds 5 oz?) and tried to stop the before bed cup of milk. We still go through a gallon a week.
  • Dd drinks about 15 oz a day maybe? I'm a lot less regimented about it than I was with ds.

They both love milk but only get it at meals and snacks, at the table. Playing outside and thirsty, they get water. Ask for a drink before bed, they get water. It has always been our routine though so it isn't a fight or struggle.

  • Thank you all for your insight. He used to drink water predominantly, and got milk with breakfast, before nap, and before bed. One day he just kind of switched and now he is milk-crazy. I don't know if he's not eating enough, or if he's mega thirsty or what. I've even offered orange juice (a treat at our house) and he says 'no thanks, milk.' I think I may adopt a 'milk with meals' policy like many of you have.
  • I guess I should add that they each drink upwards of 20 ounces of water a day.

  • We offer with all 3 meals, sometimes 2 meals. The rest of the day she has a water cup the entire time and we encourage her to drink water throughout the day.

  • Our pedi said to aim for 16-24 oz. a day. My daughter varies widely. Some days she will drink 20, easy. Some days she only wants 4 - 6. I don't worry too much about calcium because she loves Greek yogurt and cheese. And she LOVES her water. So I think it all evens out in the end.

For a while (I think around 18 months or so,) Sophia didn't want milk at all really. Her interest in it seems to come and go. She gets yogurt at breakfast, and milk at lunch and dinner each day. She used to rarely finish her lunch sippy and just get it at dinner too, but lately she's been asking for milk more often- possibly because her activity level has increased lately, cause she's been hungry a lot more too. She'd guzzle drinkable yogurt all day if I let her- she chugs it in one go. Milk she sips and carries around until I force her to let me put it back in the fridge. ETA: When she was rejecting milk, the pedi said to just make sure she has 2 servings of calcium a day, which was never a problem based on her cheese and yogurt consumption.
  • E nurses 2 good times a day and one mediocre session that I think he's dropping.

He gets offered cow's milk three times a day at school and, according to his teacher, never drinks it. At home he won't either.

I just keep letting him eat all the cheese he so desires and yogurt and cottage cheese.

  • DS went through a milk rebellion a while back, so I added like..the TINIEST amount of ovaltine to his milk..and since then, it's no longer milk, it's ovaline...or "O teen". Now he will drink 1 to 4 (take and toss) cups full of milk a day. Maybe once every other day I put a teaspoon of ovaltine in his milk, but usually, it's just milk and he can't really tell. FFWC?
