Grunting it out?

So DD can be a serious grunted when she wakes up at night after a feeding. She's been sleeping 6 hours a night for about 2 weeks now ( she's 6 weeks) and broke our lucky streak tonight I guess. She is fed, changed, and now fighting sleep in her crib. She grunts and grunts sometimes until she falls asleep but I often don't know how long to let it go. She's not crying, but is grunting and moving her lips around...then stops...then starts up again...then stops. Anyone else let their LO "grunt it out? " is this the self soothing thing I should be letting her figure out beings she's not crying?

Re: Grunting it out?

  • I am currently "grunting it out," but so far baby is winning bc she'll turn it into full blown cries if her pacifier falls out. I have her in bed with me now just til she falls asleep then I'll put her back in her crib.

  • Same issue but she is also physically fighting the swaddle. Eventually I give in before crying because of the struggling but not because of the grunting.
  • Yep, D does this.  I think it's a combination of trying to fight the swaddle and settle himself.  I was going to him if I heard him start to grunt but one night, I just HAD to pee, so I let him be... and by the time I was done, he had grunted himself right to sleep.  So now I let him be unless it starts to turn into a cry.

  • S grunts a ton while she sleeps. We just let her go until it turns into a real cry, but usually she just grunts herself to sleep.

  • I don't swaddle DD a anymore because she would fight it until she broke out of it every time. She does grunt when she has gas but also has a different grunt when she's tired and fighting sleep. It's like she's stretching and grunting. I finally gave in after 10 minutes and put her in the mamaroo and she calmed down. Darn kid won't sleep most of the time unless she's moving!!

  • Charlie grunts when he's gassy, so unless he wakes himself up, I just listen for the farts and then he goes back to sleep.

  • Yep. Little girl grunts all the time. She'd even lets out a little sob/wail occasionally. She just likes to make noise I think.
  • Yep, grunter over here. She sounds like a lawn mower.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Viv grunts for everything.... Unless she is hungry.

  • Em grunts on and off all night. Usually gas/pooping and wakes up after about 3 grunting episodes to be fed and changed. It always leads to a wake up for us rather than settling in for sleep

  • LO grunts all night and its made her a terrible sleeper. She has bad gas and also hates the swaddle. I've tried gas drops and probiotics so I'm thinking it's something that I'm eating :(

  • I have a grunter. She grunts for everything. In her sleep, when she's awake, when she's gassy, when she drops her binky...I just let it go unless she's seriously struggling with gas or starts to cry.

  • We let Vivi grunt. I figure if she's happy it's easier to help her learn how to self sooth a bit now than to make her wait to learn it til she's older and realizes we are no longer coming at her first sound.

  • My LO is a grunter too. My H gets up at 4am for work so when I hear the grunting I usually pick her up at night. But during the day I let her grunt it out.
  • Cora does this weird high pitched scream thing in the morning. She is totally asleep eyes closed and everything. Just screams (it sounds like when someone is sarcastically being terrified, like "aaaaaah, I'm so scared" in a mocking tone) then squinches up her face and puffs air in and out for a second does a little grunty/cough sound and settles back in. She will carry on like that for about thirty minutes or so and then either go back to sleep for another hour or wake herself up pooping. I just let her be unless she does her full blown goat squawk (as we call it). I believe it's definitely better to try and let them soothe themselves. If she is tired and crying and can't be soothed I will also let her cry it out then but I don't let her go more than ten minutes screaming. That works about half the time.
