Trying to Get Pregnant

Don't really understand all of this...

Hi there - I am trying to understand what is going on and failing. I guess the best way is just to go through my story. Bear with me please :)

The women is my family have a bad history when trying to conceive. I've always known this, so it's kind of been a rain cloud over my head. I started menstruating when I was 12 and had horribly painful periods. Because of this, I was put on birth control and had been on it until college. Then, I started having adverse side effects with different methods and finally decided to stop it before my wedding. Cue painful periods again, leading up to my wedding day. The local OB/GYN checked me out (blood tests, ultrasound) and prescribed the 3 month pill to start so to avoid an unpleasant wedding day. I started getting odd side effects again, so we all decided to go off birth control completely after we got married. It's been 8 months later and no period at all. So, we went to the same OB/GYN to check it out. They did several tests and everything came back normal. After being reminded several times about my weight (I understand, but it was rude), he prescribed progesterone for 5 days, wait for the cycle and then take Clomid a few days later.

We are currently looking for a more knowledgeable and helpful OB/GYN, but right now, I'm completely flabergasted when everyone is discussing period days, when the cycle starts, how to figure out ovulation, etc. I'm trying to read books and websites about it, but I'm still really stumped. I know I should be more informed on all of this, but when I asked my questions, they weren't really being answered. Can anyone help me out, even a little bit? I feel like I need to read the book "Menstruation, Fertility and Pregnancy for Dummies."

Have you read the newbie blog? It has quite a lot of helpful info. Then try fertility friend and temping. It is the only way to confirm ovulation, and will give you a good knowledge of your cycle.

We sure can. Big post up top, that's the newbie blog.

Also, a book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility".

Double also, I'm out of my league with Clomid, but the general consensus is to run away from any OB giving it out like candy. Its a serious drug.

  • Fertilityfriend.com They have tutorials. Also, read the newbie blog. It's in the post titled READ THIS BEFORE YOU POST!

Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.
  • Did you already take the clomid? If not, don't. Taking it without proper monitoring is potentially very dangerous. An OB is not trained in IF and has no business prescribing it.

  • I just started the progesterone pills tonight....an hour ago or so; I already have a headache and hot flashes. Let the fun begin! lol

I tried reading the blog that was posted, but it still confuses me a bit. I'll just keep reading and reading.
  • If you sign up for Fertility Friend, it has tutorials all about menstrual cycles and fertile signs, that break everything down into pretty manageable chunks.
  • Ok I'm still learning so I might not be a lot of help but let's start with asking why your Dr was so obsessed with your weight. Are you severely over or under weight? Also has your thyroid been checked?
I have alway had very erratic periods so my Dr checked my thyroid and not has me on meds.
  • Also what exactly are you confused about?v
  • It was helpful to watch the tutorials on fertility friend for me!

    Good Luck!!
  • I tend to agree with all the suggestiosn and comments you are getting.. and also can not recommend enought how awesome the  'Taking Charge of Your Fertility' book really is.  This book will be an amazing resource for years to come - TTC or not!  Check out Amazon.com for a version less expensive than a brand new one, if that is your preference!  I bought this book 6 years ago and have lent it to several friends in the past few years. Just received it back so I can refresh myself for my TTC journey!
