Q: Teachers- summer daycare question

Sorry, this is kind of a long/open question.
Any other teachers have to pay for daycare through the summer to ensure they can reserve their spot? We do- I understand why and our home daycare provider charges VERY fair/low prices. That being said, most days I still drop LO off at our normal time and just pick her up a few hours early. Anyone have to pay through the summer? Do you still drop your Los off? How often/long do you leave your LO at daycare? I struggle with dropping her off when I know I can have her with me but I also like to have uninterrupted time to get things done and even have some workout/date time with DH.

Re: Q: Teachers- summer daycare question

  • We have a nanny during the school year, but keep the center daycare as back up and they have to go one time every 30 days to hold their spot. We're really lucky that we can do drop ins and only pay when they're there. I actually need to bring one of the kids in sometime this week, it doesn't matter how long so I'm thinking about dropping the baby off and taking the other 2 to the park so we can run around and play.

We aren't paying our nanny over the summer, but she knew that coming into it.

There are a few home daycares that only run on the school year so they just keep their kids at home with the during the summer.

If you're paying for it anyway you might as well use it.

It sounds like you've come up with a routine/options that work well for you. Great!
Even though we're paying for it- I still struggle with dropping her off knowing I could have that time with her. Mommy guilt

  • I totally understand! To be honest I'd probably only drop off to run errands by myself or to get a break or something like that. Otherwise I'd probably just keep my kid(s) home with me lol.

I know why dc's charge to keep spots, but it's kind of a bummer.

Abby is starting daycare in August but I will need to pay for daycare next summer. I'm not happy about it but understand it from the daycare's point of view. And before the next summer there is always a chance that we may change daycares and can start in August again since there are more options when she turns 1. She has to go a day a week for 8 weeks to keep her spot even if I pay. I figure by then she will be a year and a half and will want to play with her friends and they will be able to entertain her in ways I can't. I might do a day a week or maybe a few mornings and then I can get laundry done or grocery shopping aka nap. :) I just hate already being on a teacher salary, having to pay for daycare during summer, winter, and spring break. But hope she likes it and looks forward to it.

  • DD starts daycare in the fall so we haven't had to deal with this yet, but the way they described it to me, was that we wouldn't have to pay for summer unless they started filling up and her spot may be lost, then we might consider paying so she doesn't lose the spot. We are hoping that doesn't happen but I almost like the idea of having a day a week to run errands and maybe work in my classroom!
  • I was really lucky to find a daycare that does not charge over the summer, but this is the only one in my area that does this. I'm so thankful that I was able to find a spot - DCP is less than a mile from my school and doesn't make me pay since she knows I'll be teaching each school year unless I notify her otherwise. She is a little more expensive, but worth it.

Stella stays home with me for now, but if I need time to myself my sister will watch her or my mom will take the day off.

  • Our daycare let us drop down to Tuesdays and Thursdays. We pay a lot less and I get extra time with my little guy. It's nice also because I get to have a couple of days to myself or to run errands or clean house.

  • I don't have experience with this personally, but a friend of mine and her husband are both teachers. Their daycare requires them to still send their boys/pay for one day a week during the summer to hold their spots. They generally drop the boys off and use their kid free day to run errands, etc.
