Going to a concert

Just wanted to get your thoughts on going to a concert (sorry if this has already been talked about).  I bought tickets a while ago to a weekend long outdoor concert that is this weekend.  Obviously will make sure to stay hydrated but I also figure if we stay farther back from the stage and away from most of the crowd and not so close to the speakers it should be okay but people keep asking me if it's really going to be a good idea which is making me question it.  Also now I'm getting a little self conscious about getting weird looks from people -- I don't think I've really seen a lot of pregnant ladies at these things but I do see people w/small children...

  • We skipped our annual Phish show this summer, but that was more because I didn't want to inhale a bunch of second hand smoke. We are going to the Oddball Comedy Festival next month - I'll be 36 weeks! My only stipulation was making sure we had seats instead of lawn tickets. You'll be fine! Enjoy it!!

Ha, I bought ZZ Top tickets for me and DH months ago and I'll be 39 weeks at it....LOL, definitely a FTM rookie move mentality (I will be one of those moms that feels awesome the whole time..cough). But, we bought the cheapest tickets, in the back and and made sure I had an aisle seat for restroom trips. :)

I've been to two this pregnancy - 9 weeks and 22 weeks. Comfy shoes are a must, but you'll be fine. Have fun!

  • We have tickets to Eminem and Rhianna at 36 weeks. My DH took my cousin to warped tour and I passed on that. See how you feel, if you feel up to it go for it.

  • Everyone is different.  I definitely couldn't do it this pregnancy but could have with my first.  If you go wear comfortable shoes and hydrate all weekend.  I'd even bring snacks to avoid long lines or late night cravings.
  • I fill in as a bartender at our local concert venue.  I've worked 5 or 6 shows since pregnant with this LO.  He's fine, and so am I.  Be prepared for a crazy amount of movement though!  Our LO's can hear the loud music, and my uniform shirt fits like a glove now, so I've actually had people comment on him flipping around while I was pouring!  It'll be hot and uncomfortable, so wear light clothing and stay hydrated!

  • We just went to the Paul McCartney show last week.  I was nervous too, but actually for me my little guy was more calm and relaxed through the show.  I expected him to be flipping around like crazy.

We go to see Motley Crue the 1st week of Aug.  Im a little more nervous about that one, just because the crowd is a little bit more rowdy and Im self conscious that a pregnant lady is going to totally stick out like a sore thumb, but Ive decided to go.  I told DH if I start feeling weird or there is too much 2nd hand smoke going down for my likeing that Ill just walk around a bit away from the seats.

  • It's really all about how you feel. I can handle a concert as long as I don't have to stand for hours and hours. I just passed up the opportunity to see Veruca Salt on Sunday with DH, because I knew that the venue had zero seating and the show was sold out. DH said it was a good thing I didn't go because his feet and legs were so sore from standing for 5 hours by the time he got home. I know I would have had to leave early. If it would have been in a different venue, I probably would have gone.

You know your limits at this point, so if you're game for whatever the venue and artist offers, then go.

  • I think I'm headed to a Gogol Bordello show in a few weeks...I think as long as I stay away from any mosh pits, I should be a ok :-)

  • My husband is a musician, so we often see a lot of shows.  I asked my OB about this and she said it isn't a problem.  She said your baby may respond to the music... but that you aren't doing anything harmful to the babe.  She said there's a lot of fluid and padding in there around the baby and that he should be fine.

When my girlfriends and I got tickets to Miley Cyrus (more of a joke than anything), my DH begged the doctor to tell me that it would rot our baby's brain and that I probably shouldn't go.  Ha!  Doc said that even Miley couldn't do harm to his development... and that's saying something.

9 weeks from now, I will likely feel differently (or, you know, have a newborn), but Eric Church will be here two days after my due date, and if I am still pregnant I swear I would put out a bat signal for any extra tickets. I'd hate life once I was there, I'm sure, but damn it would be a good show. Maybe I'd be so massive people would just stay away from me...

Hell for Eric Church (or Luke Bryan) I'd go while in labor! :D
    --------preemptive mobile quote fix-----

Luke was my 9 week concert. 22 weeks was Brantley Gilbert. :)

  • I went to lady gaga around 20 weeks. I just didn't get floor tickets, it was tiring though and I felt like my baby was going to fall out by the end but other then that it was fun.
  • Go for it! Like others have said, you should be fine as long as you're hydrated and have the option to sit somewhere - even in the grass, whatever works. I've been to a handful of concerts this pregnancy, and I have a couple more planned (one this weekend and one at 38 weeks, both seated); and even the ones where I've been close to the stage, I've been OK, but these were relatively not rowdy shows. I haven't tried that support belt thing, but it sounds like a great idea if you're going to be standing.

  • I am not a concert person, but if you have the tickets why not!  You can always leave if you are uncomfortable or hot!

  • I'm 30 weeks and I went to an outdoor concert last night, you definitely have the second hand smoke to contend with, but most venues have a handicap section that they let pregos and their partners sit it when you need a break, a few minutes with my feet up and I was back in the crowd, I think baby likes the beats :)
  • @lollieg84 I was totally thinking about the handicapped section early although I feel a little bad about it b/c I'm pregnant but I'm not really handicapped...  :P

Thanks for the input guys!  I feel a lot better about it.  I'm definitely going to bring my camelbak (they offer "free" water refills!).  I'm thinking I might try to bring in a couple of granola bars but I think they kind of poo poo that...I went last year and they definitely are trying to make sure you have to buy their expensive food.  Although I think I will be spending a lot of time near the gelato truck...

  • I've been to three outdoor shows so far this pregnancy. One during the beginning of second tri, one towards the end of second tri, and one just a couple of weeks ago. They were at a venue where we could bring folding chairs, so for the last two we brought chairs, but I stood the entire time for the first one (not a great idea).

I made sure I hydrated a lot and we sat near an area where I could get up and use the bathroom if needed. And I didn't sit close to the stage either.

There is another one downtown that I want to go to, but it's standing room only and in a crowded bar and I'll be 36-37 weeks.

  • Id say it all goes by your own personal feelings. I went to two concerts my last pregnancy. The first one at 10 weeks I had to leave because it was all day and outdoor during a heat wave. The second a month later was so much fun but there was a lot of smoking going on around me that made me really uncomfortable.
