refreezing defrosted embryos

OK, maybe this is a stupid question but I am curious: I have one frozen embryo on ice now (not PGDed). Let's say we do freeze all this cycle (again without a PGD). Then, when we are ready for the FET, can they defrost all, do PGD on all, transfer however many they think is appropriate and then refreeze the rest of the genetically good ones? Is defrosting and refreezing something they commonly do? I probably won't have enough embies to worry about this but I am just curious.

Re: refreezing defrosted embryos

  • I'm not sure what they do for PGD and freezing, but I did a freeze all cycle without PGD. I was only transferring one at a time, so one embryo was frozen in each. They said if it didn't survive the thaw, they would take another out and the thaw could be done fairly quick. I know it's common to freeze in batches of two, but not sure if they refreeze one if only one is transferred. Good luck!

  • It can be done.  Just know that with each process there is a risk.  A certain percentage will survive freezing, a certain percentage will survive thaw, and a certain percentage will survive refreeze.  That said, you could absolutely come out with all of them being okay. The survival rates are actually pretty high.  Good luck!

  • We're about to thaw, biopsy, and refreeze an embryo. My RE didn't tell me what the risk was, but just said there was a small chance that we'd lose the embryo. I think it's worth the testing, but you might prefer to just transfer it. It's a hard choice.

My new RE wants to thaw, PGD, and re freeze my 6 embies. He said that the risk for arrest increases with the second thaw, but he said the chance with strong embryos surviving is at about 97% the second thaw vs the 99% with the first thaw. So the risk is pretty minor.

  • Thank you, all. I'll keep you posted on what my RE says on the topic. Do you also find it hard to reach to your RE? She was there for the very first appointment, and then for the WTF appointment. That is it. All communication happens via the nurses. I hate it.
