gtky: first car

What was your first car? (New or used)

Did you buy it, your parents or did you both contribute?

Will you buy LOs car or contribute some money? Or will they buy their own car?

  • 1989 dodge shadow. It even said shadow on the side of the car in red with a stripe through it. The car was white with red cloth seats. This was in 1997. I bought it myself. I paid for my own insurance, gas, repairs.
I will not buy her any cars. I might contribute, match dollar to dollar but that's it, if we can. I think she should buy used for a first. I banged mine up so much and didn't care.

My parents bought me a used 1997 ford escort, it was teal. It was a few months after i turned 16. They got it for like 3800 I think? Maybe it was 2800. I forget.. anyways it lasted me through college and I bought a new car when I started my nursing job. Anyways I got a ton of use out of it

I will probably but her a cheap car like my parents did for me

  • A big ol' Oldsmobile that looked like it had been around since about 1970, don't remember the make. It smelled like old newspapers and cheap car deodorant, no matter how often I vacuumed it. I was pretty much the envy of everyone on campus.

My grandma's friend died and the son of the friend was like "here, you can have this car. There's no way we can sell it." My grandma paid for everything--gas, insurance, etc. I wasn't allowed to drive it outside of town, and "town" was about 5 minutes across in all directions, so gas never cost much, and it was the size of a small boat, so insurance was pretty cheap.

I will buy DS an equally embarrassing car for his first car, and I will pay all expenses until he turns 20. Then he is on his own.

1984 Renault Alliance. It was my mom's car, so it was a hand me down. Not many people can say they've had a French car, haha. I paid for everything related to use and maintenance -- gas, insurance, oil changes. My parents bought me snow tires, though.

    ETA I was 17.

  • 1992 toyota Camry.

SO bought it for me as a surprise. I got by on bus riding and walking before meeting SO -.-
We'll see how responsible DD and her future siblings are. My parents had nothing to do with me getting my permit, license, or a car because they didn't want to. They did not support me at all other than my dad throwing the learner's permit book at me after I graduated high school.

My first car I actually bought from my uncle. He literally almost gave it to me for free. It was a 90 eagle talon, I was into the little sports cars, ha haI was 17 years old. I had it for a year and then bought a ford probe. My parents bought that car but I paid them back for it, giving them monthy payments. My parents paid for insurance, tab fees etc. but I paid for the oil changes and gas.
Edit: forgot to add that yes I think we will hand down one of our cars to LO until he's out of college(if that is the rote he goes)and can afford one of his own!!! :)

My first car was an 02 cavalier. It was used and didn't last me too long. DH bought it for me from a relative so he got a good deal. I've never owned a brand new car. DH works in autobody and knows cars and goes to auctions and stuff so he finds us some pretty great used cars that don't require monthly payments, which is awesome. If anything does go wrong he can usually fix it and so it saves us a ton.

I am opening up a savings account for DD for when she is older. We will let her choose what to do with that money (within reason) so if she wants a car or needs tuition money she can use that money for it.

  • My parents bought me a red '02 Jeep Liberty. I paid for gas and whatever it needed. That was when I was 15, almost 16. I just traded it in in May after we found out we were having another baby. It just didn't have the room we need now. I was so sad to see it go. It was a standard and I kind of miss that. It was an awesome car for 11 years. I'm still kind of sad about it. I love my Suburban we got though! :D

  • My parents bought me a used '97 cavalier. I paid the gas and things on it. I'd love to say we'll buy LO a car someday if she needs it but we will wait and see. I don't believe in giving kids stuff just cause, so if she is responsible, works hard, etc I would love to help her out.

  • My first car was an 1989 Chevy Celebrity.   My parents bought it for me but I had to pay for gas, maintenance, and insurance.  When there was a really big maintenance bill they would usually help out in the form of money for birthday/christmas etc.  One year they got me four new tires as my christmas present.  I did not get my license until I was 19 and even then I didn't really want to drive - I had to for the job I had.

With the kids we will probably do something similar - buy them their first car but the rest is on them.  Part of why I didn't want to drive earlier was I didn't really want the responsibility.  Another thing I will probably steal from my parents is their rule for the first year of driving - NO passengers in the car the first year I drove, and I was not allowed to be a passenger in any of my friends cars for the first year they drove.  At the time I hated this rule but as a parent I better understand why they did that.

  • My parents got each of us our first cars. I got an 1988 ford bronco 2. I got it in 2001. It was old and the power window on the passenger side would not roll down when it was hot. I got into an accident with it and my dad was welding a piece back on to it and lit the interior on fire. We actually sold it to a guy for 100 dollars last year. It was only a city vehicle. Not hwy worthy

My first car when I was 16 was a 1985 red mazda 626 my dad bought it for like $500. It was my car in the sense that I was the one mainly driving it. But bc the parents bought it they could take it away any time I was in trouble. They paid for my insurance as my bday present from age 16-18, instead of buying gifts, which I was more than ok with! I was given $20 a week for gas for school, other than that gas and oil changes were on me. I only had it about a year bc it had a lot of internal issues, so we sold it for $100 more than he paid. It took about 5 times to start it on a cold day but I LOVED it. It was red inside and out, little, had a sunroof and in my group of friends there was only one other with a car. The car was the same "age" as I was so I thought that was pretty cool too. Here is the closest pic I could find to what it looked like.

I don't know for sure what we will do for our children concerning cars. After we sold the mazda my great grandma stopped driving and gave me her old Llumina and I had that for 6 years before I had to buy my own first car. Dh's parents bought all of their kids pretty nice used first cars. His was the cheapest of his siblings and it was still like $4000 (ten years later his little brother's first truck was $13,000!!). I like the mentality of buying beater cars for their first bc kids tend to wreck them so often, but I don't want to constantly pay for repairs. If they want to save up for a car I would probably be ok with paying a portion, or acting as a bank for them. They miss payments and I would control the car. Also seriously considering having a "kid car" that they have to share in highschool, if they can't share it than they don't need to drive. Who knows what will actually happen though.

My first car was a 1997 Light Purple Toyota Corolla.

Did you buy it, your parents or did you both contribute?

My great great aunt bought it for me and my twin.  However, since my twin wasn't behaving herself, I was the only one allowed to drive it.

Will you buy LOs car or contribute some money? Or will they buy their own car?

Depends on our finances at the time, but we will likely contribute.  However, he will need to maintain the car and pay for gas.

@babychuu Yes, we have a pretty good bus system in Honolulu. I lived in Vegas for a few years and though I never caught the bus, I realized how wonderful and convenient the one in Honolulu is.

My 1st car was a 1999 Honda Prelude. I really wanted one and found a used one at one of the dealerships. The issue with that was the car was standard. I had no idea how to drive standard, but I went to go look at it anyways and after a 15 minute lesson I was signing papers away! I was 18 at that time and I got it on my own. I had to actually go back into town to pick up my mom and have her drop me back off at the dealership because I took her car there. My parents never bought me a car. The most my mom did was give me some money for a down payment. I really doubt I will buy DD a car. I definitely will help her get one, but the payments will be her responsibility.

  • My first was a used 1995 Geo Tracker. I still have it. My mom and I both contributed. My family rock crawls and four wheels so I had been looking for one. My mom had my uncle buy one without telling me when I was 14 and he built bumpers and the roll cage. He also did a little more work on it. When we went out of state for the annual 4 wheel drive get together my uncle brought it with him and I finally got to bring it home.

We haven't really talked about it, but both kids will probably contribute towards their cars.
  • A 1999 ford explorer. It was a few years old at the time. I loved it though because it was fully loaded and I felt cool about that. My parents bought it for me. The deal was that as long as i maintained all A's they would also pay for the insurance. I paid for my own gas unless I was running errands for my mom or driving a sibling somewhere.

We decided that we will hand down Our cars to our kids.

  • 1983 Nissan/Datsun 200sx. I called it the Go-Go Gadget Mobile. It was a piece.

It was given to me by a family member but I paid for gas, maintained, insured, etc.

I'm undecided about my girls. I think we will help contribute but I'd like them to earn their share.

  • My first was a 1989 Cutlass Cruiser when I was 17. I was a year older than the car was and loved this wagon. It was robins egg blue with a matching interior. There was a fold up third row seat that road backwards. It was handed down to me but I paid for gas. I only had it for a few months before it wouldn't pass inspection and we junked it.

After that I bought a '99 Buick regal and had that until 2010 when I totalled it. I paid around 10k and loved that car. I'd love to get a buick again.

99 Pontiac sunfire, I was 19. My mom paid for most of it and I contributed the rest. I paid her back in monthly installments until I passed the car down to my little sister. I still owe my mom a little bit, but she won't take it. I told her she can come live with us when she's old and we will be even :)

DD and DS will share a used car. I'm not buying them anything new unless they get a full ride to college.

  • My first car was a very used 1991 Chevy Corsica LT that was given to me by my dad when I was 20. I loved that car. It had 212,000 miles on it when I gave it back to my dad. He sold it to someone who drove it for several years after that. I paid for my own gas and car maintenance and my mom paid my insurance until I was done with college.

My kids will not be given cars, as my DH thinks that our kids should pay for their own cars if they want one. I don't disagree, as I know my sisters and I were a little spoiled in that department.

  • I drove an 03 mustang convertable... it was used, purchased in 05. My dad's 16th b day present to me...
He also took care of gas and insurance until I was in college. I drove that thing cross country twice (after growing up & getting married, on my own dime of course) and put well over 200,000 miles on it before I traded it in for my Santa fe. (Alaska and mustangs don't mix)
I miss that thing every day. I actually cried trading it in.

My son will probably get whatever I'm driving at the time as his first car.

Mine was a new 2010 Mazda 3. My parents didn't help pay because my husband and I bought it when we got married. We both lived with our parents until we got married so no need for a car.

I have no plans to help my kids get cars of their own

  • My first car was a 91 Burgundy Buick Century! I got it for free from my grandmother who no longer could drive. I think we will see when we get there. My husband's first car was an old car from his parents who then went out and got a different car, so I guess it just depends on what our situation is when he is ready to drive.
