Bartholins Cyst

Anyone have any experience with these? I woke up with my first one yesterday. It was about the size of a golf ball. I freaked out not knowing what it was and went to the dr. I have an appointment this morning to have it drained and I am soooo nervous! I've read that these type of cysts are recurrent. If you have any experience with these please share! I need to calm my nerves! :(

Re: Bartholins Cyst

  • Thanks! I just left the doctor. She used 2 syringes of lidocaine and tried twice to lance it but there was barely any fluid coming out. The cyst is too deep for what she do in the office. She said if it doesn't start to get better by Monday then I'll have to schedule a visit to the OR to be sedated and have it lanced.

Oh I hate those. I've had it three times. Twice they've lanced them at the doctors office. The other time they scheduled me for day surgery and, under general anesthesia they lanced it and stitched it open slightly so it would continue to drain. I was home a few hours later and recovery time was minimal.

Sorry you have to deal with this. They REALLY suck.
  • I had to look this up. I had no idea there was such a thing as Bartholin glands. You learn something new. I hope the problem resolves itself before Monday!

  • I had one once and it was the absolute worst thing I have ever experienced.  Had to have it lanced in the office and had a balloon catheter in for a week.  Miserable - sending some quick healing vibes your way!

The good news is - I have only had it happen once (about 3 years ago) and haven't had any issues since then.  I'm hoping it was a one time freak thing, and I hope it is for you too!!

  • Thanks ladies! I'll be doing sitz baths and warm compresses like crazy till Monday. I hope it goes down and I won't have to be put under to have it drained.

Just kill yourself now and save yourself the misery :|

    I kid...that's not my advice.

ANYWHO...I got one when I was about 10 wks and it was PURE AGONY! That's probably the worst pain I've ever felt. Wearing pants was not an option. The only thing that helped me was Vicodin (which is apparently ok to take :/ ) & MANY warm sitz baths. They're annoying bc 1)you have to move to get in them & 2)The prep/dry off/partially redress routine is SO repetitive, but they did help eventually. I also laid with a heating pack on my junk for DAYS.

I hope you feel better soon!!

  • I've been doing the sitz baths and warm compresses. ..Also lots of ice packs! The pain is even worse now that my doctor attempted to lance the cyst. I spoke with her today and she said she could prescribe me tylenol with codeine for the pain but I declined because I'm skeptical about taking a narcotic with the baby. So far things aren't getting any better. Hoping they do in the next 2 days because I really don't want to be put to sleep for this! Why the hell does it have to be so deep!!?!! Damnit!
  • I just googled this. OMG! I had no idea these existed. I am so sorry you are going through this pain. I am traumatized for life now.

I'm sorry! I went to the ER once and they told me to go to my Dr bc it wasn't able to be drained at that time so I did and my Dr told me the same thing so I just suffered basically. Laying, with your junk to the world, on a hard table while the Dr prods around in there and bawling like a baby was NOT my finest moment

That was pretty much me yesterday morning! Lidocaine is a crappy local anesthetic because I felt that scalpel slicing me! Was your doctor able to drain it or did it drain on its own?

montella1064  No :/ No one ever was able to drain it and they never mentioned surgery, they just said to do the baths and it should go away on it's own. From that point it felt like it got a lot worse before it was better but after a week or so it was tolerable. The swelling was unbelievable, I thought for sure they could/would drain it but...guess not.

Now you know my vagina's traumatic history. Hang in there!

Oh my goodness! I couldn't even imagine going through this for a week.. I'm only on day 3 and I'm dying. This cyst is literally taking over my vagina and practically my butthole. I don't know how I'm going to even poop at this point. I think at some point I would stick a needle in and suck out the fluid on my own if the surgery wasn't an option. The pain and swelling is unbearable as you know. I'm sorry you had to go through that!
