Diet question re gluten & dairy

Sorry I'm post-happy today, my mind is just on overdrive after my WTF appt. this morning!
Has anyone had their RE suggest going gluten free or dairy free? I didn't ask my RE about this, and maybe I'm just desperately seeking answers, but I'm curious if anyone has gone this route. Thanks in advance-- You gals are like an encyclopedia of IF info, I don't know what I'd do without you!

I've heard GF and DF are good for endo and PCOS. My acupuncturist highly recommends it and so did one of my doctors. I've never had an RE recommend diet to me though. I hope your WTF went well!

My acupuncturist recommended this as well (I have PCOS). I have been essentially dairy free for a long time now but only made it about a month gluten free. I did feel really good but also was all organic and no processed foods at all. It was super expensive and I have no will power :)

Not sure how much it would really improve things in the eyes of an RE but I plan to ask at my appointment as well.

TTC #2 since 2011 (took 1.5 years to conceive spontaneously after multiple failed clomid cycles and 1 failed clomid +IUI)

  • I am a huge gluten-free advocate! However subbing with processed, gluten free products won't help you. Stick with naturally gluten free stuff. Clearly it was not magic for my unexplained IF, but I weighed less after IVF than I did before I started it. It helps me immensly with bloating. Many in my close circle have given it up, too, after watching me. Also, I have friends with other chronic issues (like back pain) whose physicians have recommended it as it is believed to reduce inflammation. I cannot recommend it enough. Try it for a month and see how you feel.

My RI suggested lowering my overall carb intake- but my DH is suggesting (forcing) me to go gluten free.. not sure if it will help.
My RI also has me on prednisone and that has made me lactose intolerant.. I can still eat cheese- but I completely cut down everything else.

  • My RE really pushes gluten free, dairy free diets. He says gluten and dairy cause inflammation which negatively impacts inflammation. I'm pursuing IVF due to recurrent miscarriage. I did not follow this diet during FET #1 but I did for FET #2. FET #1 was a BFN but FET #2 ended in another loss so I'm not sure it it works or not. I did loss quite a bit of weight following this plan even with the I've meds so I guess something good came out of it.

    All Welcome!

  • After binging on leftover Halloween candy as of late (yes you read that right) and various other sugary foods, I'm moving back into more of a balanced diet, prepping my body if IVF is next for me. I blame my recent bad diet partially on helping to numb the pain of IF and partially because of my kitchen remodel.

My RE hasn't mentioned this specifically, but my naturopath and acupuncturist advocate for it for fertility. I'm never going to do 100% dairy and gluten free, but I'm definitely resuming with my normally healthy diet.

I've mentioned this before, but I recently downloaded the iBook version of It Starts with the Egg. It goes into nutrition for egg health and I found it fascinating.

Tried for two years, finally a BFP!

This exactly - assuming, of course, you don't have Celiac disease/gluten allergy/lactose intolerance. He's a big advocate of cutting out junk food and overly-processed food, while eating a normal balance of HEALTHY protein, fat, and carbs.

BTW, @pblge, I suspect we see the same Dr. FancyPants. Tell me, is he approximately as animated as a lump of unleavened bread dough?

I'm not 100% convinced he's right, but I thought it was worth noting. There is a possibility for many of us IVFers that inflammation processes might be causing problems, but different foods may lead to inflammation for different people.

    And @airidh80 - YGPM. :)

  • Thanks for all the input ladies!! @pblge my doc sorta suggested the same thing, I'm thinking maybe I will cut down on processed foods, and maybe decrease the gluten and go from there. @ronniesgirl1981‌ any suggestions on where to start? DH can be a picky eater so I'm not sure how well I could implement gluten free...

  • Depends on what's in the fridge. This week I've been eating quinoa with fruit that was about to go bad that I roasted in the toaster oven with a splash of almond milk.
Ready to take the road less traveled.
  • I could never go gluten-free totally, but i have cut out rice wheat, and sugar(for most part) for 3 months now. Started eating salad and vegies. My brother and his wife went on a gluten-free diet two years ago and got pregnant right away, after trying for a year or so.
  • @fjamil1‌ that's what I was considering, as I'm already trying to cut down on the processed foods and sugars...I'm checking out the reading @ronniesgirl1981‌ recommended above and I'm going to see what's realistic for us

  • @Mozzarella13, I should go fully gluten-free, but sometimes i do cheat with chocolate, sweet potatoes, and fries. My MIL wants me to start eating roti (bread) again since, according to her we need it as an essential thing in everyday diet. she cant go without eating roti three times a day.
  • I've been reading about gluten free and fertility and I will give it a try for the next cycle. I wonder how long you have to be gluten free before you see the benefits?

Chocolate has gluten???  That might be difficult. I have chocolate sorbet for desert almost every night :)

There is no gluten in chocolate, sweet potatoes/potatoes unless they have something else in them with gluten or are fried/cooked in a way that contaminates them.

Edited: Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye (and some other less common grains)

Yes.  Gluten and Dairy inflammation negatively impact implantation according to my RE.  I'm trying to edit my original post to clarify but having trouble.  Sorry about that!
