Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Blood in baby's stool

I EBF my 4 month old.  About a week ago his poop changed from yellow to green.  His behavior hasn't changed, so his pedi said it was okay, and we wouldn't worry about it unless he became fussy or bothered by it.  This morning, there was pink in his diaper, closer to his penis, but I'm assuming it came from his poop, as the diaper was filled with poop when he woke up.  Anyone had this happen?  Milk protein allergy?  Dr office isn't open yet, so I'm asking you all first.  Thank you!

Re: Blood in baby's stool

  • I t might be a milk allergy issue. I was concerned my baby had a milk allergy due to his constipation, but the pedi said to only be concerned about an allergy if there was blood in the stool.

They'll probably switch him to soy

We found blood in DS's stool when he was 2 months old.  It started out as green mucusy poop and then we started seeing blood.  Otherwise he was a happy little guy and it didn't seem to ever bother him.  When we took him to the pedi they told me I would either have to go on a dairy/soy free diet or switch to a certain type of formula (I can't remember the name, but it had no dairy or soy in it).  I chose to eliminate those two things and the blood went away (not right away it can take up to 4 weeks to leave mom's system and then baby's).  DS was pretty sensitive, so I really had to be careful and read labels, but once I got the hang of it it wasn't bad and DS grew out of it by 10 months.

Let me know if you have any questions about it, I'm happy to share my experience.

Does your 4 month sleep most the nights with fewer feedings or no feedings?? If so my DS had this. He didn't eat in the MOTN since 8 weeks and in the mornings at first there was orange pink tint to his diaper and closer to the front where his penis is. It's called uric acid(from the urine)and it's a sign of dehydration. They eventually out grow this.
    Edit. Hit post before done
  • I know you said you thought it was from his poop, but just another idea. DS had "brick dust" a few times. It was clay-like in consistency and bright pink, can also be powdery. It's basically a build up of uric acid. It's most common immediately after birth but may occur later, in which case a call to pedi would be in order. If he has concentrated urine (appears yellow in diapers) frequently it could very well be from his pee not the poop. Just a thought.

Ha ha, we responded the same answer at the same time. Yes this is what I think too

  • That's how we knew my son had MSPI.  I had to cut out dairy and soy or use Alimentum formula.

  • That's interesting.  I really thought it had to be coming from the pee due to its location, and the pedi said he really didn't think so.  I've gone dairy free, so I guess we'll wait and see.  Thank you for the replies!

  • My son had blood in his stool at 3 weeks old. He was on formula and breastmilk at the time. Dr. switched to soy formula but had me stay on normal diet for a week. Blood continued to show up in stool so I went dairy free for a few weeks. Blood continued to appear so I stopped pumping/breastfeeding and he hasn't had a problem since on soy formula. Dr. said most kids will outgrow the allergy to the milk protein by their 1st birthday.
