1st Trimester

Spotting at 6 weeks

Hi this is my first pregnancy. I'm six weeks along today and about 2 days ago started spotting. They got me in for an ultrasound today. They could see the sac but They said the baby was too small to see. They thought the bleeding may be implantation bleeding but It's moderate. I basically have to wait another week to see if hopefully the baby grows enough to see. They also said the bleeding could lead to a miscarriage. I'm freaking out. Has anybody else experienced this?

Re: Spotting at 6 weeks

  • I did IVF, so if you did not, you may take what I'm saying with a grain of salt as I know some women experience more spotting with IVF due to the invasive nature of the procedures, etc. But I know women who have gotten pregnant without it and still have spotting. My friend had a full on flow of blood one day during her 6th week and everything was fine.  I started spotting before my pregnancy was confirmed, so I attribute that now to implantation.. but then I spotted off and on up until about week 6. My first ultrasound at 5 weeks 4 days we only saw a sack. Everything was fine and I'm 11 weeks along now. My advice is to not panic, although i know it's nearly impossible because I was in the same boat not long ago. At 6 weeks, they could probably only see the yolk sack, or the baby might have been in a position hard to see. My doctor told me when I had spotting that 50% of the time it's nothing and 50% of the time it could be something to be concerned about. Not terribly helpful I know, but the best thing to do is relax. I noticed that when I was spotting, if I got off my feet and drank lots of water, it seems to slow the spotting. Not sure if there was any rhyme or reason to it, but it kept me going and made me feel like I was doing something to help the situation. Relax and take care of yourself.

  • Thank you! I'm being positive. It's just hard not to feel scared and worried.
  • I'm also at 6 weeks, and had spotting two days ago. Yesterday I had blood work done, but my provider didn't recommend an ultrasound. I won't know the results of the blood work until Thursday at the earliest. I'm freaking out too! The waiting stinks.

Thank you, Amyou06! I've heard a few other stories about women who experienced early spotting and went on to have healthy babies. I'll try to stay hopeful too.

I had IVF so I'm monitored twice a week since BFP. I had bleeding Monday and saw Dr, had ultrasound, heard the 2 heartbeats. Dr said sometimes blood is 'old' blood if it's brown like mine and concern is when it's bright red blood with cramping and doubling over in pain. How is your progesterone? Progesterone drop can also cause spotting, I recommend supplements, injections over suppositories, good luck
