Protein shakes

Has anyone heard that protein shakes are unsafe in pregnancy? I've been drinking whey protein shakes in the morning about 3 times a week. Now I just stumbled across this blip online that says it's "controversial" and when I google I'm finding mixed info on it. It sounds like too much vitamin A or artificial sweeteners are the reasons to avoid it? The one I take is a GNC whey protein that is sweetened with stevia and natural flavors and no vitamin A. I just read every last word on the bottle and it doesn't saying anything about pregnancy but it just freaks me out, I had no idea it could possibly be bad??

My doctor recommended I drink protein every day and when I voiced a similar concern to her she said not to worry about it but to buy protein just like the one you described you use. So no worries! Ask your doc if you are still concerned but I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I pretty much live off of a type of protein shake. My nutritionist has been pushing them on me since the day she found out I'm pregnant. Honestly you will probably find controversial articles for pretty much any food/drink/activity during pregnancy. If you are still concerned though, I would ask your doctor.

  • Protein shakes were my standard breakfast before I got pregnant. I still have them a couple times a week, but the aftertaste of whey protein bothers me more now than it used to. My doctor said it was fine as long as I used a plain whey or vegan protein (no "performance" formulas) and to be aware of my total sodium intake. Like any processed food, protein powder can be high in sodium.

  • My dr said not to take any shakes with ginkgo
  • I agree with @TinkL0ver‌ -- you'll be able to find an article or study that makes almost everything controversial during pregnancy.

I've been drinking protein shakes since day one.

And @Risplus1‌ -- its usually the artificial sweeteners that leave that nasty after taste. Have you tried a protein like Premier Protein, which has no artificial sweeteners? If doesn't give me that nasty sweet after taste when I'm done with them.

  • My husband is looking into getting Whey Protein Diamatise iso 100. Hoping I can use it too.  I saw it doesn't have vitamin A but don't see about the sweeteners. Anyone else use this one?

I agree about the sweeteners - I can't handle them either. But it's definitely the whey that tastes off to me - I get a weird body taste, like I just licked someone. It's not something I ever noticed before I was pregnant, so I'm assuming it's just a pregnancy thing.

I've actually switched to unflavored plantfusion, which reminds me of malt powder, or half a scoop of vanilla vegan max, which dh uses (the chocolate vegan max must have more artificial sweetener because that's all I taste).

I don't usually buy pre-mixed, so I haven't tried premier, but I'll definitely have to check it out. Thanks!

My doc has me on protein shakes because I'm vegetarian & to help maintain weight however not whey. I don't do soy either. I actually use others like rice/flax powder bases from Whole Foods.
