Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5 month old suddenly HATES car seat

My baby will be 5 months old in a few days. He never really loved the car seat but if he cried he would usually settle down as soon as we started moving. Over the past few weeks he has started hating the car seat, and I'm not talking about just cranky crying fits, he throws all out angry, pissed off fits, sometimes to the point of choking and puking which scares the heck out of me! Anyone have this problem?? Any solutions?? I usually sing to him and we listen to music but that doesn't work anymore and now I'm becoming so anxious when we have to go somewhere.

  • Mine did this a few times as well! For us, we removed the newborn insert and adjusted her straps to the next step up in the back. That seemed to make things much better for her. I'm not sure if that might help in your case? I hope it gets better!

I will try that, thanks for the suggestion!
  • My 6 month old is the same. I will try adjusting the seat as well. I think he's angry that his movement is restricted now that he can move around more. We put a mirror on the headrest in front of him that distracts/entertains him a little (and I can see him) that helps a bit.

  • Is he in an infant seat? Convertibles sit higher and more upright and at this age they start to like that. Be careful adjusting the straps. They need to be at or below their shoulders and pass the pinch test so there's really no way to adjust it enough to be more comfortable but still safe.

Yes he is still in his infant seat, money is a bit tight so I have held off on buying a convertible car seat, although I am considering just doing it because I think it might help.
  • I'm in the same situation. Once he's in the carseat, he just whines and grunts, and bucks trying to get out of it.

I'm thinking about changing to a convertable as well... I can't really carry around the infant seat anymore anyways. Too heavy!

  • My 5 month old was starting to get irritated getting into his carseat...so we bought a bunch of those velcro soft toys that you can hang on the handle.  He doesn't mind being in the carseat so much now, since he has something to keep him entertained.  I'm with you on the money being a bit tight.  We're waiting till he's the full 20lbs before switching over.  Which should buy us like 2 more mths.
